Basic Trope: A reference to other work.
- Straight: Charlie makes a reference to Work 091 by uttering its best-known passage of dialogue.
- Exaggerated:
- Downplayed: Easter Egg
- Justified: Charlie is a big Work 091 fan.
- Inverted:
- Subverted: The audience, after some situation, expects Charlie to quote Work 091. Instead, he says something original.
- Double Subverted:
- After Charlie says the line, Uma says "I admire your resistance against temptation to quote Work 091 after what just happened."
- Charlie instead quotes an entirely different work.
- Parodied: Charlie makes so many shout-outs that the characters attempt to guess to what he's referring, with varying degrees of success.
- Zig Zagged: At first, there are several shout-outs to several other works of fiction, then it becomes purely vanilla. During the climax, Charlie speaks the most famous line from Work 091, and then the shout-outs permanently stop there.
- Averted:
- No one makes a reference to anything famous.
- Enforced: "Hey, let's put a Work 091 reference here!"
- Lampshaded:
- "Just in case you were wondering, yes, that was a reference to Work 091."
- "Have I heard that before?"
- "Yeah, it's just like that movie, what was it called?" "Work 091?" "Yes, and I think this line best sums it all up..."
- Invoked: Charlie is a fan of Work 091, so he quotes it for fun.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied:
- "I'm not gonna refer to anything!"
- "Don't mention that work! We might get sued!"
- Discussed: "Now imagine if we started quoting famous works based on a situation similar to this!"
- Conversed: "Aren't they gonna mention Work 091?" "Yeah, since the creator says he's a fan of it."
- Implied: Charlie has a lot of Work 091 merch, and his siblings hate Work 091, so when he goes into the living room, they groan out of annoyance.
- Deconstructed: Charlie is sued by the creator of Work 091 afterwards.
- Reconstructed:
- Charlie isn't sued, but he is ordered to pay royalties.
- Charlie isn't sued—because the Shout-Out included due credit. The creator of Work 091 appreciates the free publicity.
- Played For Laughs: Charlie's attempts to tell jokes all fall flat because he can't keep himself from quoting his favorite work.
- Played For Drama: Charlie gets fired or fails school, depending on his age, because everything he does is related to Work 091 and it has a negative effect on his productivity.
