Basic Trope: A monster without one sense, and a heightened other sense.

  • Straight: The Tropeian is a monster from urban legend that is completely blind, but can hear any noise, even from long distances.
  • Exaggerated: The Tropeian lacks all 5 traditional senses, but can detect its prey with an unconventional sixth sense.
  • Downplayed: The Tropeian is nearsighted and can't see very far, but has above average hearing.
  • Justified:
    • The Tropeian is the result of a genetic experiment gone wrong that was meant to create an advanced and obedient lifeform.
    • The Tropeian wouldn't be a threat without a superhuman sense of hearing.
    • The Tropeian's (ancestral) species never had a reason to evolve eyes and as a consequence, it's other senses were never held back by eyes already doing some of the heavy lifting.
  • Inverted: The Tropeian is an invisible monster, but makes very audible growling noises and footsteps.
  • Subverted: The Tropeian hunts in an area where visibility is low for its prey, too, like a dark forest.
  • Double Subverted: The Tropeian frequently goes to a different area when it isn't hunting that goes back to giving it a disadvantage.
  • Parodied: The Tropeian is a monster that can speak English or a made-up language, and frequently calls out to its prey, often comedically throwing itself off with its own echoing voice.
  • Zig Zagged: The Tropeian is part of a genus of monsters, and each one lacks one of the 5 traditional senses while being superhuman in others.
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "I wonder how a monster like this ever came to be."
  • Exploited: The Tropeian is a creature enslaved by humans to hunt for them.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: A character gets into a perilous situation with the Tropeian hunting them down, but doesn't find them. The only way it could have lost them is if it was blind.
  • Deconstructed: The Tropeian, due to its natural environment, evolved to not have eyes because they are unnecessary for it to hunt. It, instead, traded that for an amazing sense of hearing since its natural prey make very quiet noises.
  • Reconstructed: The Tropeian somehow wanders to a new environment where its only "prey" and source of food is humans, and it learns to hunt them with its visual handicap.

Back to Sense-Impaired Monster. Try not to make too much noise on your way there.
