Playing With / Powerless at Christmas

Go To

Basic Trope: Demonic or otherwise evil forces have no power on holy days.

  • Straight: At Christmastime, demons are powerless, evil spells are rendered ineffectual, and The Undead cannot harm humans.
  • Exaggerated:
    • This lasts for the entire time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
    • Not only that, but for every holiday, demons can't even do much beyond twiddle their fingers and idle about. Even on holidays like Arbor Day.
  • Downplayed: Dark spells are rendered less powerful on Christmas, and demons are capable of manipulating humans but not of possessing or killing them.
  • Justified:
    • Since Christmas is Jesus's birthday, dark magic cannot happen on Christmas as it is the antithesis of Jesus.
    • Happiness counters dark magic, and around Christmas, most people are happy.
    • Singing repels demons, so the demons are driven away by the carollers.
  • Inverted: Dark magic becomes even worse on Christmas.
  • Subverted: In a town plagued by demons, a caroller wonders where the demons are, since they've suddenly disappeared. His friend suggests that they're repelled by Christmas, but he's dead wrong; they're planning an attack.
  • Double Subverted: ...but once they try to initiate said attack, they cannot due to Christmas magic, no matter how hard they try. They're only planning to initiate the attack after Christmas, where there's no magic holding them back.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zigzagged: Christmas cancels out some types of dark magic or demonic creatures, but not others.
  • Averted:
    • There is no magic.
    • Dark magic is no different on Christmas.
  • Enforced: "Supernatural drama would ruin the mood of a Christmas Episode, but this show usually has so much supernatural drama! Let's make evil magic impossible on Christmas."
  • Lampshaded: "What is it about Christmas that makes ghosts, witches, and demons harmless?"
  • Invoked: Santa Claus casts a spell every year to nullify dark magic.
  • Exploited: Paranormal investigators, exorcists, and demon slayers get to have Christmas off because of the lack of paranormal activity.
  • Defied: The demons and sorcerers make their magic more powerful than whatever magic Christmas has.
  • Discussed: "Do demons still come out at Christmas?"
  • Conversed: "In fiction, Christmas is better at protecting against demons than holy water."
  • Implied: None of the scenes set on Christmas have any dark magic happening, despite it being common for the rest of the work.
  • Deconstructed: ???
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: Demons, evil wizards, Wicked Witches, etc, keep trying to cause mayhem on Christmas, only for their magic to comically fail every time.
  • Played for Drama: ???
  • Played for Horror: ???

If it's Christmastime, the Data Vampires can't hurt you on your way back to Powerless at Christmas.
