Basic Trope: A child possesses physical features from both of their parents.

  • Straight: Carol, the daughter of Alice and Bob, has Alice's blonde hair and button nose and Bob's green eyes and square face.
  • Exaggerated: Carol literally looks as though parts of Alice and Bob were stitched together to form a child.
  • Downplayed: Carol doesn't have many features that resemble her parents.
  • Justified: Carol was genetically altered to resemble both of her parents.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: It turns out that Carol is actually adopted.
  • Double Subverted: ..The birth certificate was wrong, Carol is the truly biological daughter of Alice and Bob.
  • Parodied:
    • Carol is literally a Hermaphrodite with combined male and female traits from her parents.
    • Carol is some kind of horrific Frankenstein's Monster comprised of different bits and parts of Alice and Bob's genes.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Alice and Bob do not have children.
    • Carol resembles either her mother or her father, not both.
  • Enforced: There has to be a way to show the audience that the children are biologically related to both their parents.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: With Designer Babies, Alice and Bob can pick the traits that should apply to their children.
  • Exploited: Bob denies that Carol is his daughter, but Alice points to their shared features. Bob is shamed into paternity testing and child support payments.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob seek out the help of the local Mad Scientist to make their child looks completely distinctive from them.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Carol shares some traits with Alice and Bob, but they're Ambiguously Related.
  • Played for Laughs: ???
  • Played for Drama: Carol is bullied due to the odd appearances that she derives from both of her parents.
