Go To

Basic Trope: A school that admits only male or only female students.

  • Straight: The St. Agatha School only admits girls.
  • Exaggerated: The St. Agatha School had existed for millennia and had only ever admitted girl students and employed women as teachers and staff for the entirety of its history. In fact, for centuries no man has ever set foot on the campus, ever since an unfortunate incident where a boy had snuck onto the grounds and was never seen or heard from again.
  • Downplayed:
    • The St. Agatha School is not REALLY an enforced one gender school, but it might as well be since its student body is entirely female. A male and even a non binary student can attend should they wish, but never bother to.
    • There may be a few male students, but they have no important roles, and only serve as Living Prop.
    • While the school is "girls-only" in that they only accept female students, there are actually plenty of guys at the school in the form of male staff (such as custodians) and male faculty (the teachers and other educators)—in fact, the school has a pretty even ratio of male to female teachers. In a modern setting, this may well be because of laws preventing sex discrimination in employment.
  • Justified:
    • Students perform better when they don't have to worry about how they'll be perceived by the opposite sex, or compete over them, or become Distracted by the Sexy.
    • In the case of a religious school, it functions as a way to (theoretically, at least) keep the students "pure".
    • The school is for girls who wish to become nuns.
    • The school is a finishing school, meant to train girls in the arts of music, dance, party-hosting, etiquette, and homemaking, so that they will be good wives and mothers.
  • Inverted:
    • It's a coed school.
    • The St. Agatha School only admits non binary people.
  • Subverted:
    • St. Agatha's was originally girls-only, but when the school was in danger of getting shut down due to low-enrollment, they started accepting male students alongside female students, thus making it a coed school.
    • One of the students is transgender, or a Wholesome Crossdresser.
    • It's a boarding school, and a boy is seen in one of the dorms.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Not many parents choose to send their sons there, so there might only be one boy in a given class.
    • In order to be accepted, she has to have sexual reassignment surgery, in addition to hormones and therapy. If she doesn't, or her secret is discovered, she will be kicked out.
    • He is only a guest, not a student.
  • Parodied: It's a School of Seduction taught by Naughty Nuns.
  • Zig Zagged: The school's gender ratio changes Depending on the Writer.
  • Averted: The St. Agatha School admits boys, girls, nonbinary, and transgender students alike.
  • Enforced: The show wants to appeal to a specific gender, and thus the show is set where only males or females would be in the cast.
  • Lampshaded: "How are we supposed to get prom dates when there aren't even any girls/boys here!"
  • Invoked: Alice's dad begins to worry about her virginity, and about her grades, so he transfers her to an all-girls' school to assuage his fears.
  • Exploited: The one gendered nature of the school is used to try and bring in the best of the students without having to worry about attention from the other sex.
  • Defied: Alice's dad gets over his fears (perhaps with some coaxing from his wife), and lets Alice remain in public school.
  • Discussed: The characters have a discussion about the merits of a one gendered school and if it really brings out the best in students.
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied:
    • The school's policies are never mentioned, but with only girls in the cast, we can infer St. Agatha is one of these.
    • Alice's parents threaten to send her to a school where she can't get distracted by boys if she doesn't change her ways.
  • Deconstructed:
    • One of St. Agatha's students is a trans man, and gets bullied and kicked out once his secret is revealed.
    • Non binary people have nowhere to study since schools only take cisgendered men and women.
    • Without interactions with the other gender, the girls and boys of the one gendered school lack the crucial experience dealing with the other sex once they graduate.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Rather than bully him, St. Agatha's makes arrangements for the transgender man to get reassignment surgery and tuition in an all male school where he can truly be himself.
    • One gendered schools make exceptions for non binary people or schools are opened specifically catering to non binary folk.
    • Although they may lack experience dealing with other gender, the boys and girls of the one gendered schools are able to develop without being pressured for sex and romance at early ages, and thus start healthier relationships with the other gender once they meet after graduation.
  • Played For Laughs:
    • Mark runs over to the beautiful women of St. Agatha only to be halted at the entrance due to being a guy.
    • Alice makes a whole bunch of plans for finding a boyfriend in St. Agatha, only to discover it's a one gendered school.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is tired of not interacting with any men or even non binary people due to the nature of her school, and makes an effort to desegregate.
