Basic Trope: Past technology becomes unusable in the future.

  • Straight: Alice, a time traveller from the year 1992, travels to 2012 and attempts to play a floppy disc, only to find out such things aren't supported by computers anymore.
  • Exaggerated: Alice travels from the year 1992 to 2012, and discovers that all forms of physical media aren't supported by any technology.
  • Downplayed: Alice travels from 1992 to 2007, and discovers that VHS tapes have been mostly discontinued, but are still manufactured in other countries.
  • Justified: Technology Marches On, which made the medium outdated.
  • Inverted: Plug 'n' Play Technology
  • Subverted: Alice finally manages to find a floppy disc drive that was manufactured recently.
  • Double Subverted:
    • However, it was only manufactured in a small country.
    • However, there were only a small number of units made.
    • However, she didn't notice that Google had striked "floppy" on the Iomega Zip Disk Drive hit, which can't read 3½s.
  • Parodied: Alice travels one year into the future, and finds that people aren't even aware of floppy discs.
  • Enforced: The writers want to avoid dating their movie, so they don’t include references to current technology.
  • Lampshaded: "I know it’s the future at all, but are there any floppy disc players left?"
