Basic Trope: Covering a distance using multiple shorter bursts of teleportation.

  • Straight: Bob uses his thirty-foot range teleportation ability to move across town.
  • Exaggerated: Bob uses his ten-foot range teleportation to enter space and back.
  • Downplayed: Bob only needs to use teleportation twice to cover a whole city's distance.
  • Justified:
    • Bob shifts between universes, thus lingering too long inbetween would send him adrift.
    • Bob's teleportation works by tearing himself apart and reforming, thus he doesn't have much of a time limit before death.
    • Bob's teleports draw in exotic energy, thus the longer one takes the more corrupted the surrounding area becomes when he arrives.
    • Bob doesn't want to telefrag people at his destination and thus keeps to hops that allow him to see where he's going.
    • The power-to-distance scale for teleportation is exponential. Five one mile teleports use less power than one five mile teleport.
  • Inverted: Bob using his incredibly long-ranged teleportation just to make small jumps.
  • Subverted: Bob appears to be using short bursts of teleportation, but he's actually using Flash Step.
  • Double Subverted: ...Until its revealed it only looks like he's flash stepping, and that he really does disappear when he teleports.
  • Parodied: Bob, able to teleport half an inch, regularly uses it to travel great distances instead of far more convenient and faster methods like car or plane.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Teleporters simply do not have distance limitations, nor use it as a verifiable method of transportation.
  • Enforced: "Bob needs to use his teleportation more to justify this as a superhero show, so have Bob regularly use it to travel great distances in short bursts."
  • Lampshaded: "So, instead of instantly going from Point A to B you go through the whole alphabet in the process?"
  • Invoked: Bob, wanting to take in the beauty of the world, makes smaller jumps for his journey.
  • Exploited: Bob gleefully uses his teleportation in short bursts in order to trick people into thinking he has Super-Speed instead.
  • Defied:
    • Bob refuses to make a habit out of using teleportation to cover a longer distance than it should.
    • Drake traps Bob in an area that he can't escape out of using multiple teleports.
  • Discussed: "Hey, do you think teleporters ever bother paying for transportation?" "Probably not, and even if a single jump is limited I do imagine they can just make it multistage then."
  • Conversed: "Why even bother giving a character such a pointless limitation in the first place?" "Well, not necessarily, as someone with unlimited teleportation could thus teleport between galaxies with ease. Very hard to dramatically play with infinite power after all..."
  • Implied: Bob, his teleportation known to drain at his stamina, arrives somewhere else completely exhausted and out of breath.
  • Played For Drama: Bob's short-range teleportation really wasn't meant to travel so much distance in a short time, Bob's teleportation beginning to glitch the more he uses it to unnaturally cover long distances.
