Playing With / Male Might, Female Finesse

Go To

Basic Trope: Male fighters tend to use force, while female fighters focus on finesse.

  • Straight: Bob, a Lightning Bruiser who fights with brute force, is paired with Alice, who uses Waif-Fu.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is a hulking brawler who wrestles his way out of all his problems, while Alice is a Ninja who avoids direct combat whenever possible.
  • Downplayed:
    • Both Alice and Bob are trained in using force and evasive techniques, Bob just prefers the former and Alice the latter.
    • The major characters all fall into "male might" and "female finesse," but minor characters occasionally invert it.
  • Justified: Bob's and Alice's body types are more suited for physical force and Waif-Fu respectively.
  • Inverted: Alice uses brute force, Bob prefers acrobatic techniques.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice uses a previously unseen technique that hits with as much raw force as one of Bob's attacks.
    • Bob winds up a forceful attack... then catches his enemy off-guard with a swift, acrobatic maneuver when they try to interrupt him.
  • Double Subverted: She continues to use Waif-Fu when fighting alongside him anyway.
  • Parodied: The moment Alan begins transitioning, he suddenly gains huge muscles and moves much more slowly than before.
  • Zig Zagged:
  • Averted: Neither Bob nor Alice particularly focus on force or finesse.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Bob's manly muscles and Alice's feminine grace make a great fit!"
  • Invoked: The organization made them partners because they wanted Alice to cover for Bob's weak spots and vice versa.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice refuses to partner with Bob, because she doesn't feel like their fighting styles work well together.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played for Drama: Alice and Bob are separated. Alice is attacked by an enemy too durable for her attacks to deal any damage, while Bob's foe is too quick for his attacks to connect.
