Basic Trope: Someone swallows a musical instrument or electronic device, and it still plays inside of them.

  • Straight: Sophie swallows a flute. It plays music when she breathes out her mouth.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Sophie gulps down a guitar, a bass guitar and an entire drumkit. Somehow they play complicated rock music inside of her.
    • Everyone in an orchestra swallows their instruments in the middle of a concert. The instruments play the remaining music perfectly inside of them.
    • Sophie swallows a few piano keys. Somehow this is enough to play music inside of her.
  • Downplayed:
    • Sophie swallows a duck whistle and gets it lodged in her windpipe. She makes squeaking noises whenever she breathes until it's removed.
    • Sophie swallows a small MP3 player while it's playing music. It keeps playing inside her for a few moments before the electronics are destroyed by her digestive juices.
  • Justified: See Downplayed for some relatively realistic takes on this trope.
  • Inverted: Sophie's magical flute normally plays music on its own, but stops when she swallows it.
    • ...or a character gets shoved through a musical instrument and plays music when they to speak.
  • Subverted:
    • Sophie swallows an iPod while it's playing music. People except to keep hearing the music, but they don't.
    • Sophie swallows a flute, and a piece of music is heard. Then she confesses that it's actually coming from her MP3 player.
  • Double Subverted:
    • To Subverted #1:
      • Then someone pokes her stomach to turn up the volume. It works.
      • Then she opens her mouth, and music is heard.
    • To Subverted #2: ...which she swallowed in advance and set to play music after a certain delay.
  • Parodied:
    • Sophie eats tiny flute pieces and gets frustrated that they don't magically reassemble into a flute that plays music inside of her.
    • Sophie swallows a single piano key. This somehow makes fully orchestrated music play inside of her.
  • Zig Zagged: Sophie swallows a whole plethora of instruments. Some of them play inside her, while others don't
  • Averted: Sophie swallows a flute. It doesn't play music inside of her.
  • Enforced: Product Placement for some company that sells flutes.
  • Lampshaded: "Wait... how did the flute keep playing while it was stuck in my throat?"
  • Invoked: A bizarre company sells instruments specifically designed to play music after being swallowed.
  • Exploited:
    • Ellie shoves a flute down Sophie's throat because she'd rather listen to music than have to endure another stupid rant or boring story.
    • Sophie accidentally swallows her iPod. When her friends go on a "Fantastic Voyage" Plot to retrieve it, they use its music to locate it.
    • Sophie swallows her iPod and finds that she can completely control the audio that comes out of it, allowing her to perform spot-on voice impressions, among other things.
  • Defied:
    • Sophie avoids swallowing the flute.
    • Sophie manages to turn off the MP3 player she swallowed.
  • Discussed: "I avoid using whistles whenever possible. I don't want to risk getting one stuck in my windpipe and squeak every time I breathe."
  • Conversed: "You know that thing when cartoon characters swallow instruments, they play inside them?"
  • Implied: Other characters hear flute tones when Sophie is nearby, even though she clearly isn't carrying one. If you look closely, you can see a slight deformation on her neck that normally isn't there.
  • Deconstructed: Sophie swallows a flute... and chokes to death.
  • Reconstructed: Sophie's throat is immune to being choked.
  • Played For Laughs:
    • Ellie shoves a flute down Sophie's throat because she'd rather listen to music than have to endure another stupid rant or boring story. Unfortunately, the music turns out to be even more annoying.
    • Sophie swallows her MP3 player, and it turns out to have a nasty habit of playing inappropriate music at bad times.
    • Sophie repeatedly messes up a music piece and throws the flute at her bed in frustration. The flute bounces off of it, going into her mouth and down her throat. Then the piece is played perfectly inside of her.
    • Elias is playing the flute. Sophie is a music hater, so she spends most of the entire episode trying and failing to make him stop. As a last resort, she swallows the flute... only to find out that it keeps playing music inside of her, and it's stuck there. The episode ends as she tries in vain to get it out.
  • Played For Drama: When Sophie accidentally plays a single note incorrectly, her Abusive Parents shove the flute down her throat as punishment. It plays a few panicked tones that reflect her struggle to avoid choking to death.
