Basic Trope: Somewhere along the line, an otherwise ordinary adventure story starts delving into deep philosophical and/or theological concepts that were not originally all that important to the story.

  • Straight: The Adventures of Bob features episodes where Bob meets up with Alice, who seems vaguely supernatural. They spends lots of time discussing life, the universe and everything.
  • Exaggerated: Bob's new companion is an obvious Expy of the Virgin Mary... Heck! Her name is even Mary or some variation thereof.
  • Downplayed:
    • An abstract concept of some kind is mentioned every so often, but is largely a background topic.
    • The Adventures of Bob always had a heavy focus on the supernatural, or the political, or what have you, and the last couple of episodes bring that center stage.
  • Justified: The series has an important moral or message it wants to convey.
  • Inverted: The Adventures of Bob used to focus on life, the universe and everything, but eventually it became just an ordinary adventure series.
  • Subverted: Alice starts saying deep-sounding things, but in fact it's all gibberish and she just likes to hear herself talk.
  • Double Subverted: Bob learns An Aesop about distinguishing wisdom from gibberish.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes the characters Contemplate Our Navels, sometimes they don't.
  • Averted:
    • The Adventures of Bob is just an ordinary adventure story, written for its own sake, and stays that way.
    • The Adventures of Bob never goes cosmic because it starts cosmic and stays that way.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "All this adventuring is tiresome...I think I'll gaze at the stars in wonder."
  • Invoked: Alice starts asking tough questions of Bob.
  • Exploited: Alice, a Fallen Angel, is sent to tempt Bob.
  • Defied: Bob tells Alice he's not sure, and he's kind of in a hurry.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Horror: Cosmic Horror Reveal.
