Basic Trope: A weaker character prevents someone from something by blocking them.
- Straight: An unarmed salesman, Arthur, blocks the path between two opposing warriors, Bob and Jeff, with Bob on the pursuit.
- Exxagerated: You Shall Not Pass!
- Downplayed: Bob waltzes past Arthur without even entertaining him.
- Justified: Arthur is loyal to Jeff, and is willing to sacrifice himself, whatever it takes, to defend him.
- Inverted:
- Bob cuts down Arthur and proceeds.
- Bob is defeated by Arthur.
- Jeff sees the standdown and returns, by Arthur's side.
- Arthur happens to actually have better materiel than Bob.
- Subverted:
- Bob surrenders to Arthur.
- Arthur betrays Jeff and pursues him with Bob.
- Bob leaves to find a different route.
- Arthur reveals he is armed.
- Double Subverted:
- ...only to cut down Arthur.
- ...only for Arthur to resist Bob again.
- Another commoner, Davies, resists on the other way to Jeff.
- ...with a grenade, in contrast to Bob's full-scale battle armour, complete with a machine gun.
