Basic Trope: The novel is actually less freakish than the true events that was based on.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob, a story about Alice and Bob Troper's exploits, turn out to be less weird then the true events it was based on.
  • Exaggerated: Alice and Bob is a High Fantasy story.... Which was based on true story...which was way more unrealistic.
  • Downplayed: ???
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: ???
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: An In-Universe story is advertised as "Based on a True Story", but it's Oscar Bait melodrama. The real events, which we see in the episode beforehand, are a demented comedy that would only be made as-is if the Zucker Brothers or Blake Edwards were directing.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • The author of Alive and Bob copies the real-life events verbatim on the script, even placing all of the research as an addendum in an attempt at staving off Executive Meddling (even looking for executives that won't interfere in the project in, at least, that specific way). If the audience can't believe that the whole thing's true, fuck them.
    • Alice and Bob involves Alice and Bob being abducted by aliens while they were camping and then chased through a "game preserve" planet three billion light years away by cloned dinosaurs while seeking the elixir of immortality that will bring peace to the Milky Way and they are led by a copy-cat of the Dungeon Master that is essentially G-rated Freddy Kreuger... and they survived all of that, returning to Earth safely. The true "Alice and Bob" (true names withheld to protect the innocent, at least at the beginning) drove their car into a ravine and were found after a week because someone noticed the unusual proliferation of vultures. "This Is a Work of Fiction" is very blatant (although being sued by Alice and Bob's families may still happen).
