Playing With / Dude, She's A Lesbian

Go To

Basic Trope: A third party informing someone else that the person they like is gay.

  • Straight: Bob asks Alice out. Carol says, "Dude, Alice is a lesbian."
  • Exaggerated: Bob asks Alice out. Carol says, "Dude, she's my wife."
  • Downplayed: Bob has his suspicions and dials down his flirting a bit just in case, and Carol takes him aside to tell him he's right because she knows he's thinking it.
  • Justified: Alice is shy and/or in a homophobic milieu and would not say it out loud.
  • Inverted:
    • Carol asks Alice out. Bob says, "Girl, she's straight."
    • Carol likes Alice, but thinks that Alice is straight. She confides this with Bob, who informs her, "She's a lesbian, you know."
    • Alice asks Bob out. Clay says, "Girl, he's gay."
  • Subverted:
    • Alice: "...You know, from the island of Lesbos!"
    • Alice: "I like guys too."
  • Double Subverted:
    • "...and I'm only attracted to women."
    • "...but only platonically."
  • Parodied:
    • Bob asked Alice out at a lesbian bar. Carol says, "Dude, do you know were we are?"
    • Bob runs into Alice and Carol (the latter of whom he knows already) at a bar and asks Carol to introduce them. Carol says, "Dude, she's a lesbian." Bob, undaunted, sits down next to Alice and says, "So, what's Lesbia like then, gorgeous?"
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Alice is a median system; some facets are lesbians, some are straight, some are bi. Bob only ever runs into her when a lesbian facet is fronting.
    • Alice is abrosexual. Somehow, Bob only runs into her when she's a lesbian.
  • Averted:
    • Alice is straight or bisexual.
    • Alice herself tells Bob "Sorry, I'm Gay."
  • Enforced:
    • "We need Alice to be a lesbian but not act like a lesbian."
    • "We need to sink any possibility of Alice×Bob because we have other plans for them."
  • Lampshaded: Bob asks Alice out. Carol says, "Dude, she's a lesbian. I Always Wanted to Say That."
  • Invoked: Bob: "I think you're pretty; that probably means you're a lesbian."
  • Exploited: Alice informs Bob that Carol is a lesbian in hopes he will rebound to her.
  • Defied: "You think I'm going to tell him? No way, this is too funny. I want to see how long it takes him to work it out!"
  • Discussed: Bob asks Alice out. Alice tells him Sorry, I'm Gay. Bob's taken aback, not because she's a lesbian but because he didn't think she'd straight up shoot him down like that. Alice notices this and replies, "What, did you really think we were on a sitcom where my friend Carol would have to step in and tell you that for me? Why wouldn't I just tell you myself?"
  • Conversed: "It'd be kinda awkward to have to have one of your friends tell someone who's hitting on you that you're gay, wouldn't it?"
  • Implied: Bob leaves the room to go to where Alice is. He then comes back to Charlie and says that Bob can't date Alice.
  • Deconstructed: Bob is informed that Alice is a lesbian. His response? "Oh, fair enough. What, you thought I should assume that from her haircut? Dude, how homophobic is that? And anyway, I figured she might be bisexual."
  • Reconstructed: Turns out she is bisexual, and both Carol and Bob end up in a relationship with her.
  • Played for Laughs:
    • Bob asks Alice out and is surprised that she's a lesbian even though she's wearing a gay pride shirt and making out with Carol.
    • Bob says, "I'm a lesbian, too."
  • Played for Drama: Alice and Bob live in a world where homophobia reigns supreme. Bob would have to be a heartless Jerkass not to protect her now.
