Playing With / Don't Go in the Woods

Basic Trope: The forest is the most terrifying place ever.

  • Straight: Bob goes into the Enchanted Forest one day and gets killed by a wild animal.
  • Exaggerated: Everyone who has taken even one step into the Enchanted Forest has died in some horrible way.
  • Downplayed: Bob goes into the enchanted forest and comes out battered and wary.
  • Justified: The woods can be dangerous for the inexperienced.
  • Inverted: Bob, a Wild Child, goes into the city and gets killed by someone or something there.
  • Subverted: Bob goes into the Enchanted Forest and never returns...but when Alice has to journey inside later, she finds that he never came back because he found the woods nicer than his old home.
  • Double Subverted: ...Instead, Bob is the danger in the woods.
  • Zigzagged: The amount of danger in the woods correlates to how well prepared visitors are. Some come out just fine, others are never seen again.
  • Parodied: Alice walks into the woods, ignoring Bob's advice. She comically explodes after entering the darkness.
  • Averted: The forest poses no more or less danger than anywhere else in the story.
  • Enforced: The author has gotten irritated with pro-nature propaganda.
  • Lampshaded:
    Bob: Trust me on this; don't go in the woods.
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz purposely makes the woods dangerous so that no one can get to his fortress inside.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz takes advantage of the forest's dangerousness by building his fortress there.
  • Defied: General Rogers needing a land route through otherwise wooded territory, burns it down.
  • Discussed: "I'm surprised how well we're holding up. The wilderness isn't known for being friendly."
  • Conversed: "I don't get it, why don't people learn that going into the woods is a stupid idea?"
  • Implied: Bob comes on screen dirty, tattered, and covered in thorns.
  • Deconstructed: Pine Grove, a small woodland town, has a poor economy because it's too dangerous to access via land.
  • Reconstructed: Pine Grove is, however, set up as a good checkpoint for backpackers, and most the permanent residents like the small town feel anyway.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob, a jerkass, gets lost in the woods, suffering amusing injuries and taking a hit to his ego.
  • Played For Drama: Bob gets lost in the woods and it's a race against starvation for him to be found by emergency response.
  • Played for Horror: Bob gets lost in the woods at night, and has to run from deadly creatures to survive.
