Basic Trope: A character takes off their own clothes to make a point, even when it isn't necessary.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are arguing and he's getting angry, so she strips down to her underwear to give him at least something to amuse him.
  • Exaggerated: Alice responds to every minor problem by stripping naked.
  • Downplayed: Alice removes only her shirt.
  • Justified: The argument is over Alice's clothes — she's rung up a hefty credit card bill on them and she figures it might make Bob happy if she surrenders and sells all of them.
  • Inverted: At the outset of her argument, Alice is naked, and she puts on clothes while she and Bob talk. By the time they finish, she's fully dressed.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
  • Gender-Inverted:
  • Parodied: Alice has a giant Naked Freak-Out.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice, being a Shameless Fanservice Girl, is already in the nude when she starts her argument with Bob.
  • Enforced: The writers wish to add a little fanservice to the tale, and wish to maintain Alice's pride. Cut Alice stripping as one step of showing she is Defiant to the End.
  • Lampshaded: "What are you trying to prove by taking off your clothes?"
  • Invoked: Alice thought up a comprehensive rebuttal to every point Bob would make, got them tattooed all over her body, and she's getting naked so he can read them.
  • Exploited: Jim, Alice's Sitcom Arch-Nemesis, has orchestrated things so Alice will strip in an attempt at showing defiance to getting her house, dog, and grandmother repossessed, and placed lots of high-definition cameras and sold tickets.
  • Defied: Alice wants to take off her clothes to prove she's ready to help undo the financial damage she caused, but she doesn't because their kids Adam and Beth are there, and she doesn't want to make them uncomfortable.
  • Discussed: "."
  • Conversed: "?"
  • Implied:
  • Deconstructed: Maybe Alice is trying to be defiant against those who are sexually assaulting her in her choice to take off her clothes, but she is still giving them what they want, only without the effort of removing her clothes themselves.
  • Reconstructed: The extra seconds it takes her to remove her clothes by herself is enough time (and maybe incentive) for someone to come to their senses or for the cavalry to arrive.
  • Played for Laughs: Naked People Are Funny.
  • Played for Drama:
    • Alice gets arrested and sentenced as a sexual deviant, making things even worse for her and making her regret ever having shown defiance at all, let alone through such absurd methods.
    • Alice shows defiance... and worsens the trauma her nephew is enduring by being dragged along.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is about to be raped and/or executed, and chooses to strip as her one last conscious choice.
