Basic Trope: One of Multiple Endings is declared Canon.

  • Straight: Tropeland has several endings. The Golden Ending is declared to be the one that actually happened.
  • Exaggerated: Tropeland has hundreds of possible endings, some of which are extremely similar to each other with only minor variation in details. Exactly one of them is declared canon, even if a similar ending could just as easily serve as the canon ending despite the differences being totally irrelevant to the story.
  • Downplayed:
    • Aspects from other endings that do not conflict with the Golden Ending are also declared Canon.
    • While it is never explicitly stated which ending is canon, circumstantial evidence points to one in particular.
  • Justified: The others each take place in Alternate Universe
  • Inverted: Different aspects from all endings except the Golden Ending are used in the Adaptation, i.e. Merging the Branches
  • Subverted:
    • Tropeland II appears to have taken the Golden Ending where Hiro united the kingdoms since every kingdom from the original is united and allied. Except the third act revealed he did this using mind control obtained via a demonic pact - which never happened in any of the endings.
    • Tropeland has multiple sequels exploring different endings.
  • Double Subverted: Only one of Tropeland's sequels is considered canon. The others are revealed to be alternate futures imagined by the protagonist.
  • Parodied: The ending declared canon is a joke ending.
  • Zig Zagged: One ending is declared canon, but the sequels are set in a different ending, and elements from all endings are referenced in them.
  • Averted: The creators don't give a canonical answer as to which ending is real.
  • Enforced: Tropeland II needs to start from somewhere.
  • Lampshaded: "This wasn't the way the story ended when I was the Protagonist."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: In a more meta use of exploited tropes than usual the creators went with multiple endings to create different possible sequel directions. That way they could choose many different genres and still have it connected to the old story.
  • Defied: (Of Enforced) The Creators allow you to choose what ending you did, or make it so that you've completed an ending and continued from there.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Apparently, the Anime writers never played the game the right way; otherwise, the Hero..."
  • Implied: Tropeland II is clearly set in a world where specific things from Tropeland did or did not happen.

Let's go back to Cutting Off the Branches, and not this other Trope that obviously didn't happen.
