Playing With / Blind Without 'Em

Go To

Basic Trope: A character who is completely unable to see when deprived of their spectacles.

  • Straight: Bob loses his glasses and everything looks blurry to him.
  • Exaggerated: The only thing Bob sees when he loses his glasses is the colour black, nothing else.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob loses his glasses but can get along okay without them, albeit bumping into stuff more often.
    • Bob is an illiterate without his reading glasses. Meanwhile Charlie can read, albeit at a slower pace.
  • Justified: Bob is very near-sighted.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob borrows glasses from a friend and can barely see with them on.
    • Bob is legally blind even with his glasses. They may as well be Purely Aesthetic Glasses, for all they help.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob only wears glasses to look smarter.
    • Bob loses his glasses, but it turns out he has 20/50 vision and can function just fine without them.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Looking smart is the reason he doesn't get contacts or laser eye surgery.
    • Bob has a job that requires precise distance vision, so this trope comes into play after all.
  • Parodied: Bob takes his glasses off before going to bed. When he wakes up in the morning, he fumbles around awkwardly trying to find them until his wife puts them on for him.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob can normally function okay without his glasses unless he is dead tired... then he's practically blind.
  • Averted: Bob's vision only requires slight correction.
  • Enforced: The creator was bullied for wearing glasses as a child, and wants to teach the audience that it is not cool to make fun of someone with bad eyes.
  • Lampshaded: "What is Bob doing without his glasses? I thought he couldn't see worth a damn without them." "I lost them!"
  • Invoked: Charlie steal's Bob's glasses.
  • Exploited:
    • Charlie breaks Bob's glasses the first chance he gets.
    • Alice and Charlie use this to set up a surprise for Bob.
  • Defied: Bob gets laser-eye surgery. Either that or he wears contact lenses.
  • Discussed: "Hey, Bob, don't lose your glasses. Otherwise you'll end up like Velma.
  • Conversed: "As a near-sighted person, I can confirm that we do not become stupidly blind when we lose our glasses. In fact, I only wear them if I need them; glasses aren't on my nose all the time!"
  • Implied:
    • Bob is seen stumbling around and walking into things while looking around, squinting. He even mistakes them for his friends!
    • Without glasses, Bob doesn't recognize anyone until they start talking.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob accidentally trips over something he couldn't see while trying to find his glasses, and gets severely injured.
    • Bob loses his glasses in public, and comes off as rude and inattentive to people around him.
    • Bob loses his glasses, and they are promptly stepped on by accident.
    • Bob couldn't see anything without the glasses, so losing them spells doom.
    • Bob wears huge coke-bottle glasses because he can't see without them, the rays of the sun fry his shirt, causing him to be injured as a result.
  • Reconstructed:
    • After recovering, Bob makes sure to never take his glasses off unless he absolutely needs to for whatever reason... and if he does, he'll really make sure to put them where he can remember.
    • Bob explains that he is trying to find his glasses to the strangers, who then help him find them.
    • Bob decides to get some new glasses with thicker lenses and a sturdier frame as to not break.
    • Bob simply decides to just put on a constant Clint Squint whenever he's not wearing contacts or glasses. If he's wearing those, then he's a lot more wide eyed than when he's not.
    • Bob gets Lasik, which improves his eyesight to where regular glasses will do.

Back to Blind Without 'Em... hey, where's my glasses? I can't go back without my glasses; all I see is blurry coloured circles!
