Playing With / Are We There Yet?

Go To

Basic Trope: Annoying the driver of a vehicle by repeatedly asking if you're at your destination yet.

  • Straight: When Alice is taking a trip, her kids Bob and Carol constantly ask, "Are we there yet?", to her annoyance.
  • Exaggerated: The trip lasts five days, and every time Bob and Carol are in the car, they ask, "Are we there yet?"
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob and Carol only ask once.
    • "Can you tell me when we're close?"
  • Justified: Bob and Carol don't know what the destination looks like, so they're not sure how much longer than have to go.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice, who has No Sense of Direction, constantly asks her kids "Am I there yet?"
    • When Bob and Carol are at their destination, they ask, "Can we leave yet? Can we leave yet?"
  • Subverted:
    • "Are we there yet?" "Yes, we are."
    • After Bob and Carol ask once, Alice tells them not to say it again. They agree.
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied: Bob and Carol are usually very quiet kids, but the instant they get in the car, they loudly and repeatedly ask, "Are we there yet?"
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob wonders how much driving is left, but doesn't want to annoy Alice. Carol has no problem and asks Alice. She says that she thinks it's around ten more minutes. When more time passes, the kids ask "Are we there yet?", and it turns out that there's still a good hour of driving. This process repeats in varying amounts every day of the vacation.
  • Averted:
    • Nobody goes on a car ride in the work.
    • The characters are already at their destination when the work starts, and we don't see them getting there.
  • Enforced: The producers found a car scene boring and wanted to add a joke, but couldn't think of any original material.
  • Lampshaded: After the third time, Alice says, "No! We're not there yet!"
  • Invoked: Carol, to Bob: "Let's ask if we're there yet!"
  • Exploited: Bob and Carol team up and annoy their parents with questions so that they'll stop at a place they want to visit.
  • Defied:
    • Alice tells her kids, "If you say 'Are we there yet?', I'm gonna turn this car around!"
    • Alice makes sure the kids can see her GPS, so they can tell how much longer is left without asking her.
  • Discussed: Bob asks Carol, "Are you also wondering how much longer this ride is?" Carol says, "Let's ask!"
  • Conversed: "Why does every single one of these family movies have the kids asking if they're there yet?"
  • Implied: The episode starts with an exasperated Alice parking her car and saying "We're finally here now, so stop asking me!"
  • Played for Laughs: Bob and Carol speak increasingly fast, with Alice's "No!"s getting louder and funnier every time.
  • Played for Drama: This scene is meant to show what an incompetent parent Alice is, with her being unable to control her kids. It's just the first clue that this vacation will not be an enjoyable one for Alice.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is driving to a scary place that neither of her kids want to be; they fearfully ask this as to prolong staying in the safety of their car.
