• The Great Kanto Earthquake, which the film barely scratches the surface of. Mercifully, the movie left out parts like the Tokyo Fire Whirl that killed 38,000 people seeking shelter along the river.
• Mr. Castorp is normally a nice and friendly guy but when he first talks to Jiro, he gets pretty creepy.

  Mr. Castorp: "This place is good for forgetting. Make war with China? Forget about it. Make a puppet-state out of Manchuria? Forget about it. Leave the League of Nations? Forget about it. Make enemies of the rest of the world? Forget about it. Japan will blow up... and so will Germany."
