WARNING: Spoilers are unmarked.

  • The Cold Open: The film literally starts off with an aerial view of Jud's house burning down and the camera cuts to Rachel's car door open with a small bloodied handprint on the window as it motions to the house's front door with blood on the ground and the door handle before transitioning to white...
  • This film's version of Zelda. She was eerie enough in the 1989 adaptation, but with today's combination of CGI and makeup/prosthetic work, she's downright horrifying.
    • Her death scene. As a child, Rachel was left alone with Zelda and fed her using the dumbwaiter, which she was warned not to use since it gets stuck. Zelda tried to get her food and ended up falling down the shaft to her death. It's even worse because it appears as a fake out with just the empty food bowl falling... until Zelda's mangled body drops down and permanently traumatizes Rachel.
  • Victor Pascow's horribly mutilated face after the hit-and-run incident. The sight of his exposed brain traumatizes the nurses at the hospital.
  • Ellie's death, which is just as bad as Gage's in the original novel and film.
  • Ellie post-resurrection is absolutely chilling. While a sweet girl in life, she is monotonous upon her return and quickly becomes more sinister.
    • The scene where she ballet dances after coming back is chilling. She starts out graceful, then starts breaking things, then flies into a rage. When Louis shouts at her to stop, she just seethes.
  • The Wendigo that was explained to be behind the curse/hauntings/possessions in the novel? The one Adapted Out of the original movie? It's featured here, and while it doesn't make a physical appearance (not counting an illustration Louis sees while researching the legend, and a shadow in the fog while he's carrying Ellie's body to the burial ground), it sure as shit makes its presence known and leaves its impression.
  • The ending is actually darker than the source material and the original adaptation. Louis, Rachel, Ellie, and Church are all resurrected by the burial ground and head to the car where Gage is. Louis motions for him to unlock the car and the last thing we hear before the credits roll is the click of the car unlocking. The Wendigo wins.
    • The alternate ending somehow manages to be even worse: Louis doesn't die, but still can't bring himself to kill Ellie. He and Ellie then bury Rachel, who is still barely alive, in the burial ground. Ellie and a now completely broken Louis then return to the house, get Gage from the car, and just wait. It cuts to the inside of the house; Louis is practically catatonic while holding Gage, who's crying because he just knows that something isn't right. Then the door opens. A resurrected Rachel places her hand on Louis' shoulder, and whispers, "Darling." Ellie whispers "Mommy" in response. Louis says nothing and just holds Rachel's hand. The camera then pans out on the twisted family scene, poor little Gage still crying.
