  • Marjane's Grandma's "in life, you'll meet a lot of assholes" speech. Despite the crassness of the first line, it's an incredibly heartwarming "Be Yourself" speech.
  • The end of Taji's discussion of what happens to virgins the state wants to execute, in a scary and tear-jerking way. For context, Marjane had been speaking up in school about the injustices, and Taji has parental worries. She shakes Marjane while telling her that if she keeps doing that, the government under sharia law has the right to arrest her, forcibly marry her to a prison guard, and then execute her once she's no longer a virgin.
Do you realize what this means? ... (hugs Marji) It means that if anybody tries to harm a hair on your head, I'll kill them.
  • Both of Marjane's conversations with the Reasonable Authority Figure mullah. He ends up being a Nice Guy who hears her out and mentions that he likes that she speaks her mind. Unlike practically every other authority figure in the graphic novel duology, he's not Nightmare Fuel incarnate or tries to abuse his religious power; more like the opposite. During the religious exam, he's amused when she says that she didn't wear the veil in Vienna because she believes that if God wanted women to hide their hair, he would have made them bald and that she prays in Farsi and not Arabic because it makes her feel closer to God. The mullah passes Marjane for her courage and sheer honesty. Later, when she questions the double standards of the university dress code, he invites her for a meeting and suggests that rather than being expelled, she design a women's uniform that meets the needs of the students and the government.
  • Near the end of the story, the Iranian police launch a raid on a party they suspect is having alcohol. Even though Marjane and Reza have been growing quite distant in their marriage, Reza is still concerned for her safety and tries calling her to make sure she is OK.
