Heartwarming / Midway (2019)

Go To

  • When the Chinese civilians are finally convinced that Col. Doolittle is an American aviator who had just bombed Japan, they are grateful. After all, with the horrors the Japanese have done to them, at least someone has managed to strike back at them.
  • The cheerful cry of "Daddy!" when Best's daughter sees him return from Midway alive.
  • The relationship between Best and his wife. The two are deeply devoted to one another, and Best carries a Precious Photo in his cockpit which becomes a focus during several of the most harrowing battle scenes. Best is also so worried about the ongoing threat of another Japanese attack on Hawaii he wants her to take their daughter back to New Jersey, but Anne refuses to leave. Later, she nearly breaks down entirely out of worry while awaiting news of the final battle.
  • The title card at the end dedicates the film to the sailors and airmen of both sides who fought and died in the battle. This is also the first time that Dick Best's pivotal role in the battle has been told on-screen; previous depictions tend to focus on McClusky, and even the previous film omitted him entirely.
  • The post-war carrier USS Midway, named for the battle, is maintained as a museum ship in San Diego, and part of its collection and museum experience is dedicated specifically to the battle. However as there are no intact TBD-1 Devastators anywhere in the world (all were lost or scrapped by 1944) Midway is missing one for its collection of Navy aircraft involved in the battle. This also meant the effects team had to build a full-scale mock-up completely from scratch. Once production wrapped, the film's Devastator was donated to the museum to complete their display.
