Tear Jerker / Midway (2019)

Go To

  • When the Chinese guerrillas and civilians help the Doolittle Raiders get to safe territory, the film makes it clear that they paid a heavy price doing so, with 250,000 murdered by the Japanese army in retaliation.
    • Even worse, one of them is doomed by Col. Doolittle himself inadvertently when he gave his translator his lighter, which the Japanese find as evidence of his collaboration.
  • Bruno Gaido's execution by vengeful Japanese provides one of the biggest gut-punches in the movie.
  • During the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue just before the closing credits, it's revealed that the last surviving Doolittle Raider passed away in 2019. A stark reminder of how few of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who fought in World War II remain as the Greatest Generation slowly passes into history.
  • The fate of the Chinese civilians who helped Doolittle escape the Japanese forces. The Japanese attacked them in retaliation for Doolittle's raid on Tokyo. Particularly heartbreaking is the fate of the one schoolteacher who actively assisted Doolittle and was last seen telling Doolittle to escape with the others while he went back to look for his family after the Japanese dropped bombs on them. In the finale, he's shown being held as a captive and is implied to have been tortured severely for helping Doolittle escape, and we don't even know if he ever did find his family.
  • When the Hiryu is lost, Admiral Yamaguchi tells his surviving officers to leave the ship and fight for Japan. The dishonor for this defeat is entirely his and he will go down with the ship. Many of them clamor to be permitted to die with him. He has to order them to leave.
Admiral Yamaguchi: I am touched by your offer, but you young men must leave this ship. That is my final order.
  • Willie West's death; he worries about his lack of confidence. Best tries to help by making him his wingman, only for Willie to die on his very first patrol. Best comes home to his wife, depressed and also losing confidence in himself as a leader.
