- Why does the family start out so impoverished? At the beginning of the film, they're living in a rathole apartment with all their bills past due. This is despite them having apparently been able to afford a perfectly spacious house previously. Did both the house and Jean's life lack insurance? They should have at least gotten a million-dollar payout between the two of them at the minimum.
- Arthur mentions he is "just a math teacher" and the insurance payout might have only been enough to cover the medical and funeral expenses, we don't see much of their old house or their life before the fire, so it might not have been worth a "million-dollar" payout.
