  • When receiving letters from Zuko in the Fire Nation capital recapping the events of Book 1 during Chapter 5, one aside from Azula has her expressing incredulous disbelief that Zhao managed to get himself promoted to Admiral.
  • Zhao's reports are notably hodge-podge and skip over a lot of details. Azula gets more information from the generic rumor mill than his reports. She is especially amused that he conspicuously failed to mention how he lost an Agni Kai to a disgraced teenager.
  • Ty Lee agrees to leave the circus to help Azula hunt for the Avatar...on the condition that she attend Ty Lee's performance in that night's show. Azula's reaction to the whole thing is priceless:
Oh, well. It can't possibly be that bad, can it?
    ——
As it turned out, yes. Yes, it very well could.
  • In a strong display of empathy, Azula understands why Mai's parents are willing to trade away the extremely valuable King Bumi for their infant son Tom-Tom, who the rebels kidnapped. She's not exactly happy that they're losing a valuable prisoner for a two year-old, but she understands. She is much less empathetic when she finds out that trading Bumi was their idea.
  • No one in the Fire Nation really knows what happened at the North Pole, other than "Zhao did something unbelievably stupid, the moon disappeared for a bit, and a giant ocean blob destroyed the fleet." Azula tries to get more information from Zuko... with limited success.
"Uncle was right to protect the koi fish!" He declared hotly.
Azula's mouth snapped shut. Then she opened her mouth and closed it again. Finally, she simply said, "The... koi fish."
"Well, the moon spirit or whatever. The point is that Zhao shouldn't have tried to kill the moon!"
    "...Kill the moon."
"Yes!" He was getting more and more heated up as his rant continued. "And then the Avatar wouldn't have merged with the ocean and created the giant koi fish and destroyed our navy!" Zuko's voice dropped slightly. "And the ocean wouldn't have grabbed Zhao and killed him."
"..." Azula pinched the bridge of her nose. "Zuko."
    "Yes?"
"Has the Avatar mastered earthbending yet?"
"Uh, not since the last time I saw him. Why?"
"Because something obviously hit you on the head rather hard, and I'm wondering if it was a boulder."
  • Part of the reason Azula recruited Mai was because she knew that Mai and Zuko had crushes on each other. She is constantly annoyed by them spending all their time together.
"Zuko! Firebending training! Now!" She snapped at the two figures huddled several feet away. "You two have already been talking to each other for the whole day!" And she could have sworn she'd heard giggling coming from them earlier, except that the very idea of her brother or Mai giggling was almost too horrible to contemplate.
  • Zuko's advice for tracking the Avatar is very simple: Wait at a city. Sooner or later, news will show up.
Azula: Why do you sound so sure of that?
Zuko: Well, if there's one thing I learnt from my hunting the Avatar during the last few months, it's that they are incapable – and I stress, incapable – of keeping themselves out of trouble for long. If they're active, we'll hear about it soon enough.
  • Azula really hates the rain, in great contrast to Ty Lee who is unbothered by it. One embarrassing memory for Azula is that she once accused Ty Lee of treason for not hating the rain like any proper Fire Nation citizen should, which caused Ursa to laugh.
  • After the conquest of Ba Sing Se, Mai brings up the list of things they need to deal with. Top of the list: Bosco.
"All right. First up on the list of things we need to take care off after the coup is..." as Mai scanned the list, her expression deepened. "Um, the king's pet bear."
    "...Bear?"
"Yes... apparently he was very fond of it."
"And I care in the least bit what a deposed Earth King likes to keep as a pet because?"
Mai shrugged. "The Dai Li apparently thought it was important enough to put at the top of the list."
Azula sighed and rubbed her forehead. "Fine, then—"
"Hey, Azula!" Ty Lee burst into the room. "You should check out the cooking staff in this place! They’ll make you anything at the drop of a—"
"Ah, Ty Lee, perfect timing. You're in charge of the bear," Azula said before she strode out of the room, already flipping to the next item on the list.
Ty Lee blinked. "I'm in charge of the what now?"
Mai simply shook her head and sighed.

  • The Ember Island players are as inept as in canon. However, this time, we get to see more how they butchered Azula's part of the story.
    • Their take on Azula's character is as cartoonish as with the other characters.
Play!Azula: What a drab, dreary Earth Kingdom town! The decorations and designs are so green. And dull. And green. It would all look so much better if everything was FIRE!
    • Their retelling of Ba Sing Se's fall devolves into a non-sensical Gambit Pileup between Azula, Long Feng, and Jet. And then Jet dies. Which is doubly ironic since, first, Jet was actually Azula's Unwitting Pawn all along, and second, Jet doesn't die in this AU.
"And now, foolish girl, you have fallen into my cunning trap!" The man playing Long Feng pointed at her.
"No, Long Feng, it is you who has fallen into my cunning trap!" The actress playing Azula pointed back.
"Ha! You're both fools who never even realized that you have both fallen into my cunning trap!" The actor playing Jet jumped onto the stage, raising both hook hands up in a triumphant gesture.
And then a giant rock fell from the ceiling, squashing Jet under it.
Both Long Feng and Azula took a long look at the boulder, before shrugging and resuming their dramatic pointing match.
"Did Jet just... die?" Mai asked after a moment.
    "Yes, that was really unclear."
    • In the play, Azula's half-assed argument to convince Zuko to betray Iroh has to be heard to be believed.
"Oh you know." Actress Azula waved her hands carelessly. "He's old. And smells. And frankly he'll probably betray us anyway so might as well get it out of the way."
    • Though it's topped by their take on the Day of the Black Sun. First, it starts by a particularly inept case of exposition by Azula. Then, Zuko comes up with the most non-sensical reasoning to justify why they should betray the Fire Lord.
"Sister." Zuko said as he cupped his chin, trying to look as if he were contemplating something.
    "What is it, brother?"
"Today is the day of the invasion."
"You mean the Day of Black Sun, the invasion where the Avatar will attempt to sneak into the capital during the chaos of battle, find our father the glorious Fire Lord, and kill him?"
    "Yes, sister. That invasion."
"Well then, what is it, brother?"
"I have been thinking that there is a sure-fire way to prevent the Avatar from assassinating our Father, the glorious Fire Lord."
"Really? And what is the plan of yours, brother?"
"The plan is..." and Zuko raised a clenched fist. "To assassinate the Fire Lord ourself!"
    • The Day of the Black Sun ends with Zuko and Azula fighting each other to the death, with Azula coming on top. With his last words, Zuko claims he didn't fight for his ambition, but for his HONOUR. Then Azula melodramatically claims she has won, but it has cost her everything, collapses onto the floor, and supposedly dies too.
Sokka: Well, that subplot went nowhere.
    • The reason why Azula stays to watch the entire play is given by Zuko.
"Maybe at the start, but by now, as far as she's concerned, if she goes back home before the final curtain, she loses."
"Loses?" Mai cocked her head to the side, an expression akin to curiosity flickering across it. "Loses what?"
"The contest between her patience and the play."

  • The battle against the airships on the day of the Comet goes pretty much exactly as in canon, even with Azula there.
"All right, then here goes nothing." Grabbing the speaker, [Sokka] leaned in close, trying to muffle his voice to sound deeper. "Attention crew, this is your captain speaking. Will everyone please report to the bomb bay immediately. Repeat, will everyone report to the bomb bay immediately. We've a very special birthday to—
"There is no way that is going to work," Azula muttered as she folded her arms and glanced out the windows to check their positions relative to the other airships.
    ——
"I cannot believe that worked," Azula grumbled as she grabbed the throttle, pushing the ship forward as fast as it would go.
"I know!" At her side, Sokka shared her surprise, although he was markedly happier about it.
"There are dozens of systems that need to be constantly monitored on these things. Even if there was a birthday celebration you're not supposed to leave your posts just for that!"
    "I KNOW!"
