With a successful expedition to the forbidden lands of Old Valyria, dragons have returned to the world accompanied by the resurgence of powerful magic. The Targaryens are not the only faction that seeks to harness the eldritch powers for their own ends. In the third century of Aegon’s dynasty, their reign and very existence will be threatened as it has never been before.
This fic provides examples of:
- Adaptational Name Change: Jon Snow is named Jaehaerys Targaryen, though he often still goes by Jon to those closest to him.
- Adaptational Nice Guy: Viserys. Due to not having to spend most of his life on the run; constantly looking over his shoulder for assassins sent to kill him, Viserys is a much nicer person, though still arrogant.
- Berserk Button: A Dothraki killed Jaehaerys' lover, so he burns the Dothraki horde that the man was apart of with his dragon, leaving only a few survivors.
- Bond Creatures: Jaehaerys has two. Ghost, his direwolf, and Syraxes, his dragon. The Stark children also all have direwolves, just like in canon.
- Canon Foreigner:
- Visenya Targaryen, Rhaegar and Lyanna's daughter and Jaehaerys' younger sister.
- The whole Honorro family from Volantis, who are setting up be be major antagonists going forward.
- Dorian Hightower, the husband of Arianne Martell.
- Lucerys Velaryon's children; Aerion, Maekar, and Elaena.
- The Chosen One: The High Priestess of the R'hllor, Kinvara, believes Jaehaerys Targaryen to be this. She even hails him as "the Great Emperor of the Dawn".
- Cool Sword: Jon's sword Judgement can ignite with Black Fire and steal the souls of his enemies.
- Disappointed in You: Rhaegar Targaryen after finding out his son, Aegon, slept with Margaery Tyrell, the daughter of one of his most important Lords. He even goes as far as comparing him to his father, who was one of the worst kings in Targaryen history.
- Dragon Rider: Jaehaerys Targaryen. He has plans on hatching more dragons so that the other Targaryens can become this too.
- Dreaming of Times Gone By: In his dreams, Jaehaerys has lived many different lives, during many different time-periods in Valyria. Due to this he has witnessed many different key points in history, such as the Rhoynish Wars with Valyria, and even the Doom of Valyria.
- Living Weapon: The dragons. In the world where men fight with swords, dragons are nigh unstoppable.
- Never Found the Body: For being the spearhead of the rebellion, Robert Baratheon was sentenced to the Night's Watch. He went missing beyond the Wall, where he is presumed to be dead, since his body was never recovered.
- Polyamory:
- The King, Rhaegar Targaryen, is married to both Elia Martell and Lyanna Stark.
- His son, Jaehaerys Targaryen, is set to marry both his sister, Visenya Targaryen and Myrcella Tully.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: The whole premise of this story. Instead of accepting his fate of marrying Myrcella Tully, Jaehaerys Targaryen instead joins Gerion Lannister on his trip to the ruins of Valyria to uncover its secrets.
- Spared By Adaptation:
- In canon, Rhaegar Targaryen, Elia Martell, Rhaenys Targaryen, Arthur Dayne, Lyanna Stark, Ashara Dayne, and Rhaella Targaryen perished during Robert's Rebellion, here they all survived.
- Gerion Lannister survives his trip to Valyria.
