The story centers around Desti forming a romantic relation with Meggy just after the events of If Mario Was In... Splatoon, and how this relationship develops overtime.

SMG4: Love & Cephalopods provides examples of:
- Adaptational Gender Identity: Karen is nonbinary and goes by she/they pronouns.
- Adaptational Heroism: Rob turns on SMG3 once he discovers his true plan, and helps the Glitchy Gang take him down.
- Adaptational Karma: Lawyer Kong is a Karma Houdini in the canon Lawsuit Arc. Here, he gets beaten by a very pissed off SMG4, fired by Miyamoto and kicked out of the Kong Gang.
- Adaptational Nice Guy: Desti is much nicer than her canon version.
- Miyamoto is much more reasonable and turns out to be helping the main cast take down Lawyer Kong behind the scenes.
- Adaptational Sexuality: Desti, Meggy and Tari are lesbians and Saiko and SMG4 are bisexual.
- Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
- Meggy and Desti started out as rivals before becoming sort of friends before Desti died. Here, they are on good terms and soon become a couple.
- Saiko and Tari were just friends in canon, while here they start dating and later get married.
- Whisk and Chet also become a couple.
- All for Nothing: The end of the Lawsuit Arc reveals that there's a clause related to the SMGs that states that their creations fall under fair use, meaning that SMG4's channel was safe all along. He... doesn't take this well.
- Ascended Extra: The Anti-Cast/Snitchy Gang gets more focus in here, especially Rob.
- Death by Adaptation: Meggy dies in place of Desti in the Anime Arc. For a while, at least.
- Dies Differently In The Adaptation: Niles died alongside SMG0 in the exploding God Box in the canon Revelations movie. In this fic's series of events, His body and mind falls apart due to him absorbing too much Anti-Meme Energy, meaning he gets weak enough for Melony and Cipher to deal the final blow, and after the gang escapes, he dies alone as his universe explodes around him.
- Related in the Adaptation: Whisk is Karen's daughter and Zack, Katie and Cory's big sister.
- Spared by the Adaptation:
- Desti survives the Anime Arc, but at a terrible cost...
- Due to the Genesis Arc playing out differently here, Axol doesn't get possessed by Zero/Niles and thus, doesn't need to be put down by Melony.
- In the same arc, Axol and Melony are able to get SMG0 out of him and Niles's fused form and so, he joins the main cast, taking on the name "Cipher".
