Fanfic / A Legion For Westeros

Go To

While hunting boar in the Kingswood, Robert Baratheon discovers a lost band of sellswords who speak a barely recognisable dialect of Free Cities Valyrian. Befriending them, the King, along with Ser Barristan, returns to their camp, only to discover that it is a Castra housing an entire Roman legion. When Robert returns to King's Landing with them, will Westeros ever be the same?

Written by High Plains Drifter, A Legion for Westeros is dedicated to the urban legend of the apparent disappearance of the Ninth Spanish Legion, which appears in the Kingswood on the day Robert made his fateful hunt.

Provides examples of the next tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Lancel Lannister combines this trope with Took a Level in Badass, defeating Ser Balon Swann in the flight to the Westerlands.
  • Affectionate Nickname: The Romans take to calling Robert "Rex Hercules".
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Lancel Lannister and Ser Barristan Selmy both fill this role in relation to King Robert.
  • Foreign Queasine: Ned is understandably perturbed when Cassius's aide talks him through the process of creating Garum, which the Ninth Legion desire, among other things.
  • Lost Roman Legion: The Ninth Spanish Legion, to be precise.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Joffrey is disinherited, and sent to the Wall, along with Pycelle.
  • Stout Strength: Robert comes close to defeating eight legionaries working in concert in a sparring match, armed only with a mattock and a shovel and aided by two squires.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Robert enters this when he learns of Cersei's infidelity with Jaime, and personally impales her on the Iron Throne, killing her.
