Amira

• Beware the Nice Ones: She calls out Shelly for her ignorant behavior when pushed to breaking point.
• Sassy Black Woman: She is rather intense and very opinionated.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be moody at times but loves Erza very much in the end, and is nice to others also.

Akbar

• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he is hostile towards Erza, he does seem to care about his well-being.
• Moral Myopia: He's quick to bring up the injustices that African Americans have faced in the past and present while downplaying any similar transgressions that have affected other racial and ethnic groups, particularly Jewish people.
• Throw the Dog a Bone: He and Shelly plan the wedding for Ezra and Amira and they wed after realizing their errors.

Shelly

• Innocently Insensitive: Her ignorant behavior is due to her not being exposed to culture for very long, and thinking that Amira will give her social status. She gets better toward the end and apologizes.
• Jewish Mother: She is Jewish along with her whole family, and in this way to her son.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she may be egotistic and patronizing, she does care about her son and his wife. Eventually, she does change her ways and finally views Amira as a person towards the end, after realizing her initial behavior.

Mo

• Lady Looks Like a Dude: Due to her slightly androgynous look, she is mistaken on an airplane for a guy by a man next to her.

Omar

• Only Sane Man: He strives to keep the peace between the disagreeing families and is more level-headed than the rest of them.
