The Insurrection

    General

Motivated by centuries of corruption and misrule by the United Earth Government's Colonial Administration Authority in the Outer Colonies, the Insurrection refers to the colonial independence movements which seek to secede from UEG rule and govern themselves as they see fit. Rather than being a single movement, the Insurrection as a whole can be described as a loose confederation of hundreds of different insurrectionist cells, each with their own unique ideology and unified by their utter hatred of the UNSC. For decades, the Insurrection waged an undeclared civil war against the United Nations Space Command over control of the Outer Colonies, which resulted in the deaths of millions. But although the Insurrection forced the UNSC to embark on a massive rearmament campaign and spurred the creation of the SPARTAN Program, it was only the arrival of the genocidal alien Covenant that put the conflict on hold, for now.

  • Commie Land: The Worker's Liberation Party is a neo-communist Insurrectionist group active on the predominantly Russian and Slavic colony of Vyraj who desired to secede from UNSC control, using terrorist tactics such as taking hostages and car bombings in an attempt to do so.

  • Grey-and-Grey Morality: The conflicts between the UNSC and Insurrection, especially when compared to the Human-Covenant War.
    • On the one hand, the Insurrectionists have a point in desiring greater autonomy for individual colonies as well as fighting against the stark class divides between the wealthier Inner Colonies and poorer Outer Colonies. There are also legitimate arguments to be made that the UNSC is highly authoritarian, prone to heavy-handed responses to perceived threats to their power such as the infamous nuking of the colony Far Isle after a local rebellion spiraled out of control. Not to mention that the Insurrection didn't start off violently, it merely escalated to that point after peaceful protests seemingly weren't going anywhere.
    • On the other hand, the Insurrectionists have murdered millions of people over the decades through their terrorist attacks, ranging from assassinations to car bombings and even nuking human colonies themselves. Most infamously, the Insurrection largely attempted to assist the Covenant at the beginning of the Human-Covenant War, an act that led to dozens of colonies being glassed and millions of people dying. Most Insurrectionists saw this and either went underground or held their nose and signed up with the UNSC. Those who remain are nothing more than die-hard extremists who would rather see their colonies burn than live under UNSC rule, continuing their terrorist activities and actively making it harder for the UNSC to fight the Covenant.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Ironically enough the Insurrection actually helped save the UNSC since their war led to both the creation of the Spartans a major increase in the size and quality of the military just in time for the Covenant’s attack.
  • Skewed Priorities: The Covenant want to exterminate humanity and they have made it abundantly clear that they don't care about whether or not humans are with the UNSC or not. Whats more they have humanity badly outmatched in terms of numbers and technology. In spite of all this some members of the Insurrection continue to fight against the UNSC despite it being made clear that if they fall then humanity is doomed.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters:
    • The Insurrection desires to obtain independence on behalf of their individual human colonies from what they perceive to be an authoritarian dictatorship in the UEG/UNSC. While at first they used peaceful methods to obtain more independence, and there is certainly merit to calling the UNSC authoritarian, they eventually shifted into using outright terrorist attacks such as mass shootings, public bombings, boarding UNSC vessels and slaughtering the crew, and even nuking entire colonies in extreme circumstances.
    • To the UNSC, the Insurrectionists are nothing more than power-hungry, violent terrorists who lost any goodwill for their cause with their actions and deserve nothing more than to be put down. One member joined the UNSC after his planet was destroyed by the Covenant, and views anyone who continues the fight when there's the issue of human extinction on the line as terrorists and murderers that would rather have humanity burn then let the UNSC be in charge of anything.
    • It's noted that the Insurrection has actually gotten worse due to the Covenant, as most of the saner members have realized what's at stake and joined the UNSC, meaning that most of the ones still fighting the UNSC are the ones who were already the most extreme, and no longer have anyone trying to rein them in.

The Forerunners

    General

The Forerunners were a highly advanced civilization who ruled the galaxy over a hundred-thousand years ago before disappearing under mysterious and unknown circumstances. Despite their disappearance, the technology they left behind have stood the test of time and remain far ahead of anything either humanity or the Covenant are able to produce on their own, with the latter basing all of their technology off of reverse-engineered artifacts they've managed to find. Their technology and works were so powerful that the races of the Covenant believe them to be gods, or rather ascended into godhood after using Halo to embark on what is known as the Great Journey and, by finding the Halo Array, they too can walk the Sacred Path.

  • Adaptational Origin Connection: As Remnant is revealed to be a Forerunner Shield World in this fanfic, they clearly have some bizarre connection to the history of Remnant… but what exactly that connection is remains to be seen.
  • The Alternet: The Forerunners stored all of their information onto the Domain, which somehow was both alive and interwoven into the fabric of the universe itself. The Domain was so powerful, a Cartographer station on Peponi was able to give accurate stellar readouts of distant star-systems in real-time.
  • Great Big Library of Everything: All aspects of Forerunner records and information were stored onto the Domain, which could be accessed by Forerunners when desired.
  • Hard Light: A common feature of their architecture and particularly weapons.
  • Humans Are Special: For reasons as of yet unknown, the Forerunners took a particular interest in humanity, denoting them as "Reclaimers" set to inherit their technology. Many pieces of Forerunner technology are able to be instinctively operated by humans without any training due to genetic markers planted into their population. This extends to Covenant technology due to them being based off of reverse-engineered Forerunner tech. The discovery of this connection by the Prophets of Truth, Mercy, and Regret from a fragment of the Forerunner Smart A.I Mendicant Bias led to the Covenant declaring war on humanity in a bid to hide the truth and secure their hold on power.
  • Mecha-Mooks: Forerunners made liberal use of automated drones such as Sentinels to destroy their enemies or protect their installations. with Remnant likely to have these synthetic drones resting inside the planet’s Forerunner facilities.
  • Precursors: Serve as this for the entire setting, with their technology forming the basis for everything the Covenant has.
  • Ragnarök Proofing: Despite disappearing roughly a hundred-thousand years ago, their technology is still perfectly functioning, something that Qrow Branwen is amazed by on Peponi when he, the UNSC, and the rest of the Huntsmen Delegation secure the Cartographer.
  • Sufficiently Advanced Alien: Their technology was so advanced that it is virtually indistinguishable from magic, making it little wonder why the Covenant worships them as gods. Furthermore, given the Prologue revealed that Remnant is actually a Forerunner Shield World as the Covenant began to glass it, it may explain quite a few things regarding Remnant’s esoteric nature.
