Awesome / The Invisible Man (1933)

Go To

  • Griffin himself has many great moments as the Invisible Man, but by far the best would have to be how he takes revenge on Kemp; quite apart from not being fooled by the police's attempt to protect him, he waits until Kemp feels as though he's managed to get to safety, and then reveals that he's sitting in the backseat of the car and has been following him this whole time. Then he ties Kemp up, drives the car to the edge of a cliff and...
Griffin: I hope your car's insured, Kemp: I'm afraid there's going to a nasty accident in a minute... a very nasty accident.
Kemp: Griffin, I'll do anything, everything you ask!
Griffin: You will? That's fine. Just sit where you are; I'll get out and take the handbrake off and give you a little shove to help you on. You'll run gently down and through the railings, then you'll have a big thrill for a hundred yards or so 'til you hit a boulder, then you'll do a somesault and probably break your arms, then a grand finish-up with a broken neck! Well, goodbye, Kemp. I always said you were a dirty little coward- you're a dirty sneaking little rat as well! Goodbye!
(He takes the handbrake off, letting the car roll off the cliff- Kemp screaming all the way, dampened by the sound of Griffin's maniacal laughter.)
  • Griffin’s amazing speech when he’s reunited with Flora. He goes from a sad, quiet tone while talking about his current state and love for Flora, to a loud, maniacal rant about the power of invisibility. It’s even more impressive when you consider you can’t see Claude Rains’ face at all.
Flora: Why did you do this?
    Jack: For you, Flora
    Flora: For me?
Jack: Yes, for you my darling. (…) I was so pitifully poor. I had nothing to offer you Flora. I was just a poor struggling chemist. I shall come back to you, Flora, very soon now. The secret of invisibility lies there in my books. I shall work in Kemp’s laboratory till I find a way back. There is a way back, Flora. And then I shall come to you. I shall offer my secret to the world, with all it’s terrible power! The nations of the world will bid for it, thousands, millions! The nation that wins my secret can sweep the world with invisible armies! (…) Power! Power to rule! To make the world grovel at my feet! (…) Power I said! Power to walk into the gold vaults of the nations, into the secrets of kings, into the Holy of Holies, power to make multitudes run, squealing in terror at the touch of my little invisible finger. Even the moon’s frightened of me, frightened to death! The whole world’s frightened to death!
