The fact that everything for the first 50+ chapters was just meant as a prologue might appear strange to readers of modern stories until you remember that the manga is inspired by the Icelandic sagas. Sagas often had more than 50 chapters (half of the entire story) about the adventures and conflicts of the ancestors of what might finally be the main characters of a story or about the adventures of the heroes before the (for the story) important events happen.
