TEG Chapter 14: Centaur; It's What's For Dinner

Written By: Thomas
POV: Percy
Deaths: Chiron (1), Grover (3)

The chapter begins with another angry rant by BIC. The thing that's setting him off now is not just people who worship false gods or flame him, but those who "moke (his) brothel". For those of you who already know about the Prayer Warriors, this is before Thomas and Noah had a falling out.

Percy goes to his old mentor, Chiron, whom he believes will be more receptive to converting, even though he lives in a swamp full of the bodies of Christian martyrs, kills Christians with voodoo (which the author claims is a magic that was created at Hogwarts; the former is a common misconception, while I hadn't heard the latter before), and is gambling with a fellow Satanist.

Chiron asks whether Percy has succeeded in killing Jerry yet, and Percy, in an amusingly concise and blunt answer, says no, elaborating that he has converted to Christianity. After describing heaven, he asks Chiron to convert and help him turn the rest of Camp Half-Blood Christian, and Chiron immediately complies. The gambler does not, though, and is apparently killed on the spot and has his body dumped in the ocean to rot.

Chiron goes out to Camp Half Blood, but at some point after he has left, one of his students comes back and reveals that the residents killed him and then ate him alive (let the logic flaw sink in for a moment; I once wondered whether this counts as two deaths for Chiron). Percy is disgusted so much he wants to vomit, which is understandable. Infuriated, he sets out for the camp and finds the residents, led by Grover, dancing around Chiron's corpse.

Percy accuses Grover of killing a "fellow Christian" ("Fellow" for Percy, but not Grover), and of being like Judas for being willing to sell a friend out for 30 gold coins (a much larger sum than the 30 denarii that Judas received). Jerry then has a Sword Fight with Grover, who can only taunt him by claiming his god is a lie and Percy's a "stupid beaver" before he's decapitated; it seems as though Grover, despite his status as an antagonist, really can't accomplish much, even with the low standards set by his peers.

Twenty residents of the camp are converted and baptized, and Percy realizes the time to fight the evil gods has come.

Next Installment: Percy reports to Jerry about his success.
