Between the FOB and the Citadel beam are a No Man's Land and a Reaper Destroyer. Fail Shep and a bunch of Thanix missile-bearing tanks have to make it across this hellhole so the tanks can blow the Destroyer to hell.
Fail Shep gives an inspiring but inconsistent speech and heads out with Liara and James. The No Man's Land is a surprisingly short area, but it is packed with enemies, which means it would take a while if I wasn't playing on Narrative difficulty.
Speaking of which, Narrative makes the game really boring, but it does allow you to punch Banshees and Atlases to death since sync-kills are disabled.
Sadly, EMS doesn't seem to affect this mission. Some of the Hammer comm chatter sounds more desparate than I recall, but it has been a while since I last played this mission.
Eventually, the squad reaches a tank whose crew was killed. The good news is that the Thanix Missile are still intact. The bad news is that the Destroyer is too close to the beam, which is preventing the Thanix missiles from reaching their target. Hammer's only hope is to allow the Reaper to move away from the beam and toward Fail Shep's squad.
This leads to what is more or less the Final Boss of the trilogy: increasingly difficult waves of Reaper troops. The final wave is a shitload of Banshees accompanied by the Destroyer's instant kill beam.
Fail Shep perseveres and manages to launch the missiles. The rest of Hammer follows suit and the Destroyer falls. Anderson comes over with a tanks and drives Fail Shep to the beam. It is all smooth sailing from here.
Suddenly, Harbinger descends and fires a million instant death beams. Hammer makes a mad dash to the beam but Reality Ensues and they all get slaughtered. Luckily, the squad has Plot Armor.
Liara and James get fried by a beam.
Luckily, Fail Shep has Plot Armor.
Fail Shep gets hit by an instant death beam point blank.
