Chapter 3: You Know What They Say When You Can't Find The Body...

As the sad music from Secret of Mana plays (which fits the tone and is better than the tense music), Starfire reads the letter. Raven walks right into Beast Boy's prediction as she asks what nice things he did, and is absolutely stunned when Starfire, with a disapproving look, reads 'Tell Raven to TAKE THAT BACK!' to her.

The reactions to the rest of the letter's individual parts aren't shown, but in the end, they regret what they did to Beast Boy. They look for him to apologize, but can't track him because he left his stuff behind (Traveling light is in many ways easier, but not taking anything shouldn't make it more difficult to find him so much as make it hard to tell whether he planned to leave). Evidently, they forgot about how Beast Boy brutally mauled two girls who objected to his stalking Terra.

After a few days of fruitless searching, they see The Void in the sky, and are shocked. Things go From Bad to Worse once Kamica, Medeva and Sir Vile, three villains with hardly any characterization, arrive, and easily defeat the four Teen Titans. After Sir Vile offhandedly mentions the Dark Prognosticus, Raven immediately goes Oh Crap!. Incidentally, while Robin is a skilled detective, and the others often help solve various mysteries with their own areas of expertise, the Teen Titans generally don't find out much for themselves in this fic, instead largely being dependent on what others tell them. Of course, that's far from the only way in which they're ineffectual compared to canon.

The three newcomers make short work of the Titans and continue their destructive rampage. One unfortunate part about Teen Titans is that most of the villains had relatively little motivation for what they're doing (for example, it's unclear why Slade wants an apprentice), making them come off as underdeveloped. This, so far, goes even beyond that, as the minions have no personality apart from their loyalty to their master (who's an entirely different can of worms, but let's not go into him for now).

Terra is caught in the middle of it, and is aware that if she uses her powers, she'll reveal to the world that she still has them. But then a voice- one Terra recognizes- orders the minions to stop, apparently causing Sir Vile's eyes to be visible through the slit in his helmet. The minions, promising to return, leave in fairly standard fading effects. Terra wonders why they didn't kill her, when it would be a trivial task.

The Teen Titans return home to treat their wounds, and see that the Void has gotten larger. Raven is horrified to learn that the Dark Prognosticus has been stolen, and Starfire is similarly horrified that her homeworld is in danger. More news, however, comes from the Doom Patrol; on patrol, they found Beast Boy's body, with a hole blasted in it, and blood pooling nearby. They planned to return the body to the Titans, but it vanished.

With Beast boy "dead," (the sudden disappearance of his body is obvious foreshadowing for the fact that his death doesn't stick), the narrative wastes no time in shaming the Titans and Doom Patrol- except for Elasti-girl- for helping this happen, giving special focus to Mento. While Mento is an overly strict leader that puts the mission before the well-being of his team, including his own, he is still one of the good guys, and he and Beast Boy do reconcile in the course of the mission to defeat The Brain at the start of Season 5.

As the Teen Titans and Doom Patrol head out, inside a dark castle, a figure known as Count Logan berates his minions for almost harming Terra, and they apologize, saying that they were excited about their master bringing an end to all worlds. Dr. Beljar, a previously unseen minion, reports success with the Void, and they eagerly await creating a new and perfect world. Count Logan sends his minions away, and engages in some Evil Laughter.

At this point, it shouldn't need saying, but Count Logan is obviously Beast Boy, a.k.a. Garfield Logan. The name aside, when you consider Count Bleck's role in the game (trying to destroy reality because of the sadness of his lost love), it seems natural that Mykan would have Beast Boy assume his role.

As for Count Logan's minions, at this point, they don't bear as much of a resemblance to Count Bleck's minions, although Dr. Beljar eventually turns out to be an Expy of Dimentio. If you've played Super Paper Mario, it's thus just as easy to predict that he will betray Count Logan. Evidently, they're supposed to be expies of the original Teen Titans, with Beljar being Cyborg, Medeva being Raven and Kamica being Starfire, but Sir Vile doesn't resemble Robin all that much.

But enough of that for now. The chapter ends with a shadowy figure, apparently unrelated to any of Count Logan's other foes, vowing to stop him.

Next Installment: The Void is more dangerous than anyone has thought, and takes its personal toll on a certain Titan...
