* {{Sequelitis}}: ''Valhalla'' doesn't really hold a candle to the original ''Vikings'' series. Popular reception is that it's simply an inferior sequel, with less interesting plots, characters and actors nowhere as memorable as those from its predecessor. And while ArtisticLicenseHistory was already employed in ''Vikings'' but generally tolerated, many viewers believe that ''Valhalla'' takes it too far.

Renamed trope

* QuestionableCasting: The casting of Caroline Henderson as an allegedly [[RaceLift black]], [[GenderBender female]] version of [[HornyVikings Jarl Estrid Haakon]] in an ostensibly historical series has been regarded by many to be the worst offender of the trope.
** Then there was some throw back against the casting of Russian Sofya Lebedeva in season 2 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. What likely set it off was the incredibly misjudged press release which referred to Yaroslav the Wise as a ruler of northern Russia rather than the ruler of Kievan Rus', which caused many people accusing Netflix of playing into Russian propaganda used to justify the invasion.

Re-adding entry as over 6 months have passed since the release of the series. This is the general mood I've observed among reviews (emphasis on the fact that "inferior sequel" doesn't mean "just bad")

As elaborated here, the entry uses a Flame Bait trope (which isn't accepted) and is too complainy and tring to be a Take That towards white supremacists and fake history nerds. The entry should aim at correcting a wrong belief spread among the audience, that's just it. Furthermore, Vikings is notorious for its large Artistic License, so mixing up historical figures is far from being a stupid mistake.

* FanDumb: The reaction to casting African descended Caroline Henderson as jarl Haakon [[FlameBait predictively]] stirred up disapproving reaction from history buffs and even more predictively from white supremacists. Several vloggers in both camps has created several videos about the ''real'' jarl Haakon. The issue being that most assumed the character to be a representation of Hákon Sigurðsson (more commonly known as Haakon jarl), [[CowboyBeBopAtHisComputer while any one with access to wikipedia would quite quickly be able to tell that Hákon Sigurðsson was long dead and the character more likely represented his grandson Hákon Eiriksson]]. That confusion is pretty forgivable to a layman who would not know that there were 3 Hákon jarl ([[DeadGuyJunior Hákon Sigurðsson's grandfather and grandson]]). [[KnowNothingKnowItAll But coming from people who claims to know everything about the viking age]] it comes off as very sloppy. Those who watched the show and knew of the figures would be able to tell that jarl ''Estrid Haakon'' [[InNameOnly barely resembles any historical or saga figure at all]] and it's very unclear if there was any [[GodNeverSaidThat serious intention from the writers to make her a representation of a historical figure]].
