Ambiguous Disorder is now Diagnosed By The Audience, an audience reaction and an YMMV item;

Added DiffLines:

* DiagnosedByTheAudience:
** It turns out that James [[spoiler: is not a sociopath,]] but his monotonous speech patterns and difficulty connecting with people indicate that he's at least a little off. [[spoiler: Much of it has to do with his trauma from seeing his mother kill herself.]]
** Bonnie has trouble connecting with people, walks and talks slowly, is easily manipulated by others, and doesn't see a problem in killing people.

** Emil, the security guard who nearly arrests Alyssa. He's large, intimidating, and serious... but, when Alyssa does the right thing when it would've been ''very'' easy to save herself instead, he softens up ever-so-slightly and lets her go. As one of the only truly competent, decent adults in the series, you're left wishing he was in more than one episode.

** Frodo, the gas station clerk. Thanks to his [[AwesomeMcCoolname awesomely absurd name]], utter hatred of his job, and temporary kinship with the lead characters, he leaves quite an impact.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: All the AdultsAreUseless or abusive pricks, the show’s attitude is [[SlidingScaleOfCynicismVsIdealism borderline nihilistic]], and even Alyssa can be incredibly hard to like at times due to her [[LadySwearsALot dirty mouth]] and her and James’s horrible behavior. Fortunately, the two leads are [[TheWoobie sympathetic enough to root for]] and their CharacterDevelopment is endearing to watch.

* SpecialEffectsFailure: In the beginning of the first episode, you can clearly tell that the bat James killed is plastic. Which is a bit strange, because all the other dead animals look convincing.

* {{Adorkable}}: James is awkward, doesn't know how to talk to people or show emotions, has weird hobbies and talents, and is somehow a little cute.

Approved by the thread.

Added DiffLines:

* CompleteMonster: [[VillainWithGoodPublicity Clive Koch]] has the dubious honor of being the only irredeemable character in the show. Hiding behind the mask of a [[WickedCultured polite and charming philosopher]], Koch is in truth a vile sociopath who records himself [[SerialRapist violently raping women]] and takes pictures of their bodies as morbid trophies, with [[{{Ephebophile}} not even Alyssa]] being safe from him. The second season revealed even more of his dark and twisted nature, as he had [[ManipulativeBastard manipulated]] a mentally-fragile woman named Bonnie into falling in love with him, treating her as a sex object and ignoring her attempts to communicate with him from prison.

** Early on after running away, Alyssa calls home, and her prick of a stepdad picks up. Alyssa asks to speak to her mother, and the asshole coldly tells her her mother doesn't want to speak to her... despite his wife being right next to him and obviously wanting to talk to her daughter.
** The final moments of the first season, [[spoiler:where James takes the blame for their crime spree and runs away from the police, Alyssa sobbing and screaming for him]].
** When Alyssa realizes [[spoiler:her dad couldn't give two shits about her]].

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The show's soundtrack makes surprisingly excellent use of dream pop, indie rock, and even doo-wop, adding to the anachronistic atmosphere.

* JerkassWoobie: Because of all the ''horrible'' shit they've had to deal with growing up, both James and Alyssa are pretty mentally and emotionally disturbed, and are pretty unpleasant people as a result. At least, before CharacterDevelopment starts setting in.
