** On a meta level, the film equates two entirely different definitions of "dream" (images shown to you while you're asleep and goals or ideals you consciously form). This leads to the entire storyline and the [[BrokenAesop Aesop]] being pretty much incomprehensible.

could be anything but an extended cheesefest with more holes than a sieve in the writing, made to appeal to elementary school-age kids and no one else... and the way it shamelessly embraces all this is why some people find it so enjoyable.

* FridgeBrilliance: The CG is one of those tropes that breaks the illusion, and therefore the viewer has no suspension of disbelief... but that's the point; you're not supposed to think Planet Drool is real. The audience is just like the rest of the adults in the film that think Max's dreams are ultimately fake. It's not until [[spoiler:Sharkboy, Lavagirl, and Mr. Electric come to Earth at the end that their existence is validated]].
** Lavagirl's representation in the real world [[spoiler:(besides Max's mother)]] is a ''lava'' lamp.
** When Sharkboy and Lavagirl first arrive in Max's classroom, Sharkboy pretty blatantly attacks Linus and rips up his paper. Now, that could just be his shark instincts acting up, but why would Linus have that effect on him? [[spoiler: Well, considering the BigBad for most of the film is Linus's counterpart...]]
** [[spoiler: The reason why the protagonists can't defeat Mister Electric with the Crystal Heart is because it can only be used by the Ice Princess, whose father won't let her out of the castle. At the climax, Mr Electricidad has to let Marissa go out to defeat Mister Electric.]]
** Why could Max not do anything special like Sharkboy and Lavagirl until towards the end? Simple. He didn't realize he was asleep and dreaming until then. It's a lot like lucid dreamers, since, unless you realize you're dreaming, you're bound to how you are in real life in your dreams. Then again, he's surprised when they tell him he's dreaming afterwards, so...
** Max is a lucid dreamer without knowing it. The flashbacks with him hanging out with Sharkboy were in his dreams, as well as meeting Lavagirl. He was having stress dreams about his parents' fighting, which is why they still take place in his home and you can hear them arguing, as it blurred in his memory as being reality. This is also why he thinks they're real with no proof until they show up. Linus is also a lucid dreamer and knows it. Lucid dreaming is usually where people realize they're dreaming during dreams and affect their dreams as a result, usually with a sign letting them know. Until then, when you're regular dreaming, you just think everything is normal, or are otherwise unable to affect the dream. When he realizes he's dreaming, he gets super powers just like many lucid dreamers would.

* SpecialEffectsFailure: In ''spades''. Like ''Film/SpyKids3DGameOver'', the film has very poor 3D and green-screen effects combined with CG that would have been terrible even for a direct-to-DVD film, despite costing 50 million dollars to produce and the special effects being produced by '''''11 different studios''''', including Creator/IndustrialLightAndMagic of all companies.

** The psychological aspects of Max and his dreams aren't really explored much outside of surface references. The movie's overall message is supposed to be, "as long as you work hard, dreams can come true" as well, so this helps muddle it, but Max's parents are fighting a lot and thinking about getting a divorce. Max is cognizant of this and it's represented in his dreams that he's worried about them. He even imagined Sharkboy, Lavagirl, and an entire planet to escape reality and convinced himself they're real. Until they show up, the movie treats them as such, so the setup of the movie could've involved what a kid goes through when they're worried about their parents splitting up, but the film gets wrapped up in dealing with Max's bully and proving to him his dreams were real.

** While Sharkboy is, I think, established as being a real person from Earth, [[FridgeBrilliance which explains why he was able to break out of the ice after Planet Drool shut down]], Lavagirl's implied to be born from Max's dreams, since she takes Sharkboy from Earth to the other planet, which would have it make sense to why when she gets revived and so does the planet when she gets thrown into the lava to revive her, since they could be linked in some way. Plus her hearing Max tell her what she really is only makes sense if she originates from his dreams.
