* AlternateAesopInterpretation: The stated moral about trusting your instincts is widely dismissed as glossing over [[BrokenAesep the bad decisions it led them to make]] and their other [[BrokenBase controversial actions]]. Fans instead viewed the moral as "even if you're right you still need to have tact and proof, but even an outrageous claim without tact or proof might have some truth so should't be wholly dismissed".

* AlternateAesopInterpretation: Even if you're right, you still need to gather proof and be tactful about it. On the other hand, no matter how outrageous or ridiculous someone's claims are, there might be some truth to it and find out yourself instead of jumping into conclusions.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: The two-parter was Princess Luna's only season two appearance beside her focus episode, "Luna Eclipsed". However, she only appeared for two brief cameos with lines in part one, and only returned for a single line of part 2, uttering only three lines in the entire two-parter. Some people got upset with Luna disappearing during the invasion, leading to multiple interpretations of where she could be, but most of them leading to the meme of "Luna is useless."[[note]]However, the previous episode already established that Luna isn't in Canterlot until nightfall in her cameo; she shows up in this episode only after the post-wedding party (which is occurring at night) began. This fact is often glossed over.[[/note]]

* {{Narm}}: During the dramatic "This Day Aria" song, the reveal shot of Shining Armor's derpy MindControlEyes may have caused a few unintended giggles.

* Queen Chrysalis and the changelings were meant to be an AlwaysChaoticEvil race who sought to invade Equestria to steal and [[EmotionEater feed on its love]]. But the implication they needed to feed on love to survive caused them to instead come off as a WoobieSpecies forced to do so and operating under BlueAndOrangeMorality rather than maliciousness. Chrysalis was the only one to show [[KickTheDog excessive/unrelated cruelty]], but this added to the changelings sympathy by being made to commit such and suffering under a BadBoss, and for many wasn't enough to offset that she was trying to feed her subjects. It's only after the fact AscendedFanon that there later appearances would fix this.

* HilariousInHindsight: Celestia has a MemeticMolester version of herself called Molestia, which started out as a succubus that took her form. Queen Chrysalis takes the form of Shining Armor's lover. Guess we know the identity of that succubus now.

* EvilIsSexy: Queen Chrysalis given that she [[EmotionEater needs (to consume) love to survive]], [[ShapeshiftersDoItForAChange can become literally anyone you can think of]], and the similarities to both [[SuccubiAndIncubi succubi]] and [[VampiresAreSexGods certain vampires]], it's no wonder that there's been an explosion of 'sexy Chrysalis' art online.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: [[BrokenBase Controversy on the episodes' overall quality aside]], this finale was considered a game changer by many at the time of its release as it was not only the first big 2-Part finale, but it also dropped the SliceOfLife setup seen in [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E26TheBestNightEver The Best Night Ever]] in favor of the more traditional heroes vs. villains scenario that was only exclusive to the season premieres. 7 seasons later, this concept continued on for every season finale except for Season 3 that many newcomers find it hard to understand what made it such a big deal back in 2012.

* TheWoobie: Princess Cadance. The poor girl was kidnapped and held prisoner below Canterlot while Queen Chrysalis was running around as her. She spends her ''wedding day'' locked in a cave underneath Canterlot. If the ''heartbreak'' in her voice as she sings her half of "This Day Aria" doesn't make you want to hug her, you don't have a heart!

** Queen Chrysalis. Is she pure evil, a WellIntentionedExtremist and[=/=]or ObliviouslyEvil who just wanted to feed her people, Shining Armor (or [[LesYay Cadance]])'s ex, or something else?

* EvilIsSexy: Queen Chrysalis given that she [[EmotionEater needs (to consume) love to survive]], [[ShapeshiftersDoItForAChange can become literally anyone you can think of]], and the similarities to both [[HornyDevils succubi]] and [[VampiresAreSexGods certain vampires]], it's no wonder that there's been an explosion of 'sexy Chrysalis' art online.

* WhatAnIdiot: Chrysalis. She has just used the power of Shining Armor's love for Cadence to subdue Celestia, yet she scoffs when Cadence says that "[her] love will give [Shining Armor] the strength" to renew his repelling spell against the Changelings.

* MoralEventHorizon: Queen Chrysalis leaving Twilight imprisoned under Canterlot in caves no pony even ''remembers exist'' and she'll likely ''never'' be found, while taunting her sadistically about that fact. It's also more or less implied that she was taunting Twilight to get her to kill the real Cadance.

** There are ''many'' "X is really a Changeling" stories out there, based on the premise of a given character being in truth a channeling in disguise and this being revealed to everyone during the episode's climax by the "love explosion".

* NeverLiveItDown: Princess Celestia being [[TheWorfEffect easily defeated]], which prompts some viewers to see how useless Celestia was in the episode. Even though Chrysalis's powers was fueled by Shining Armor's love, and even the Changeling Queen herself was surprised for it.

* RonTheDeathEater: According to some fans, repelling an invasion that was spearheaded by the leader committing MindRape whose dream since childhood is to see Canterlot burn to the ground counts as unprovoked racist genocide against an innocent, peaceful race.
