** Plenty of people took every opportunity they could to personally attack Fred for "stealing Rodney's comic away from him". One web developer friend of Rodney's used the occasion of Rodney's wife having a child to quip, "Hopefully Fred won't steal ''this'' baby too." That incident forced Rodney to tell his fans to back off, and both him and Fred to separately reveal a few details about what happened.
* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: There are several extremely negative reviews of MT that focus entirely on the plot and art around comic 300, i.e slightly after Rodney left, and appear to be unaware that there's ''over a thousand'' more story pages by now, with substantial changes in art and characterization.

* BrokenBase: Rodney Caston's departure from the strip drove a wedge deep into the fanbase that ''would'' persist to this day if the comic still updated frequently enough for anyone to care.
** Basically, it boils down to Caston-fans preferring the video game themed randomness of the early strips, while Fred-fans prefer the relationship building and complex plot of the later strips.
** Plenty of people took every opportunity they could to personally attack Fred for "stealing Rodney's comic away from him". ** Back before updates became laughably infrequent, many negative reviews amounted to ItsPopularSoItSucks. Other negative reviews came either from anime haters (who dislike Fred's art style) or purists (who were offended that Fred unashamedly uses a Japanese art style ''and'' that he managed to get his comic sold alongside actual manga[[hottip:*: nevermind that no one complained when ''Dramacon'' and ''Bizenghast'' did the same thing]]).

* CreativeDifferences: This is the official reason for Rodney Caston leaving the strip. The reality is far more complicated.
** We don't know exactly what happened, and we never will because both of them signed NDA's. The few details we've gotten from both of them over the years suggest that Rodney got bored with writing the strip pretty early on, leaving more details to Fred, then disapproving of the direction Fred wanted to take things; the last strip Rodney wrote by himself (aside from a couple of one-offs several months later) was, ironically, [[http://megatokyo.com/strip/132 a strip showing the different ways their characters viewed the world]].[[hottip:*: It's not a coincidence that immediately after this strip ran, Megatokyo switched to its now-standard chapter format.]] Although Rodney wasn't contributing much of anything to the series, his name was still on the masthead and he still owned half of the copyright, something Fred came to resent. Eventually, Rodney agreed to let Fred buy out his half of the IP, and Rodney's name disappeared from the masthead at the end of April 2002,[[note]] comic #253, a DPD sketch published 1 May 2002, is the first one to credit Fred alone,[[/note]] with earlier strips receiving an OrwellianRetcon to change the copyright info.

*** No, Fred ''is'' a woobie, but for different reasons. First Sarah had a complicated pregnancy that nearly killed her. Then she gave birth several weeks early, as a result of those preexisting issues. ''Then'' their son had some serious health issues (common for preemies). '''Then''' Sarah was diagnosed with lymphoma. '''THEN''' Fred started having heart problems. Seriously, nothing good seems to happen to the guy. On top of all that, there are many people who hate him so much that his bad luck is cause for celebration.

The whole \"artist\" thing is easy to misinterpret if you dont read the rant... which I guess is the point of it being under Unfortunate Implications, but it overall gives off a negative vibe, IMO at least, so I erased it. I tried to rewrite it for better comprehension, but if anyone wishes to do a better job than me, they are free to do so.

* LoveItOrHateIt: Quite nearly ''the'' defining webcomic example, and certainly the most financially successful. Quite a lot of people like it for the plot, the humor (which does still remain reasonably true to the series' roots), the cast, and whatnot. Just as many people have an evident ''burning hatred'' for the comic, for reasons ranging from the art, the plot (again), the cast (again), the update schedule/[=DPDs=]/SGD strips, the relationship between Caston and Gallagher and which camp you fall into, etc etc etc. Just ''mentioning'' this comic on most internet forums is instant FlameBait, the divides are that bad.
