* SelfImposedChallenge: One of the most common player-created challenges is the "full album run", a form of OneHundredPercentCompletion combined with SpeedRun (since you have to do it all before you hit the PlayableEpilogue, with many intermediate deadlines for accomplishments imposed by scripted in-game events before that). See BraggingRightsReward above.

See BraggingRightsReward above.Especially challenging is the mythical "Party Picture", the last picture in the photo album. Awarded after your dad visits at the end of the third Spring, if you've fulfilled all the requirements for it. Note that these requirements are so stringent that it wasn't until May 2011 (nearly ''twelve years'' after the original release of the game!) that the fandom [[http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/197528-harvest-moon-64/faqs/62403 conclusively determined]] the exact requirements.

* MainstreamObscurity: Often cited as one of the best ''Videogame/StoryOfSeasons'' games, despite how few people have even played it. The game cart has become a fairly desirable collector's item as a result. The Wii U Virtual Console release helped relieve some of this.
* MissingSecret: Any day between Fall 10th and 12th, a unique forageable called The Full Moon Berry appears on the mountain near the restaurant. Other than selling for 500g there's nothing special about it.
** A weather vane can be found sometimes in the mine. Rick will claim that it belonged to his grandmother and take it if you talk to him. It never leads to anything else or has any other purpose.

* SequelDisplacement: ''[=HM64=]'' is more known of than the original SNES ''Harvest Moon''. However, the UsefulNotes/PlayStation counterpart, ''[[VideoGame/HarvestMoonBackToNature Back to Nature]]'', features many of the same characters (though with different relationships and different personalities) and is far better remembered than [=HM64=]. This is largely due to the fact the GBA game ''[[VideoGame/HarvestMoonBackToNature Friends of Mineral Town]]'' (which is essentially an enhanced port of ''[[VideoGame/HarvestMoonBackToNature Back to Nature]]'' with slightly different personalities from the Playstation version) was the first ''VideoGame/HarvestMoon'' game played by a great deal of fans. [=HM64=]'s version of the characters were basically ignored by Marvelous until ''[[VideoGame/HarvestMoonTreeOfTranquility Tree of Tranquility]]'', when Gray and Elli are referenced to in their original roles.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Despite the high praise this game gets, fans of later games may find it underwhelming with how basic much of its gameplay and mechanics are compared to later titles, with its low variety of crops while also lacking trees and the crop quality mechanic, having few raisable animals and few animal products, no fish species, a barebones mine that's additionally only available in winter, and no cooking whatsoever, among other elements that are less substantial or nonexistent. There also isn't a lot to spend your money on, with there being only a handful of house upgrades and no barn upgrades, no land you can buy, only a few tools to buy and tools are upgraded automatically with no cost, no cooking meaning you never need to buy ingredients, and there isn't a lot of more frivolous items to spend your money on, so you'll run into MoneyForNothing fast in this game, especially after you buy the [[GameBreaker greenhouse]]. You additionally can't play as a girl, and as expected for a game released in the 90s, there is no option for gay marriage. Players may find that its characters and character interactions still hold up though.

Technically that means Natsume styled its own name wrong, then, not misspelling it.

* GoodBadTranslation: There were more than a few quirks with the translation, like items being called different things depending on where you checked, but the most amusing was definitely Natsume spelling ''their own name'' wrong on the title screen. (They used "Natume", [[http://legendsoflocalization.com/did-natsume-misspell-its-own-name-in-harvest-moon-64/ which is technically correct]], but obviously inconsistent with the usual translation.)

** A subversion with the lucky bracelet. The player can receive special key items from all five girls on their birthday. Karen's present had many rumors surrounding it due to her claiming it would bring you good luck in some way. It turns out that it increases the chances of getting sunny weather from 80% to 90%. Notably the other four presents do not have any special effects.

** There is a broken music box that can be dug up on your farm. If you're friends with Rick he will repair it and it can be given to one of the bachelorettes for a high affection boost. However as long as you don't have it in your inventory, another one can be dug up. It's a handy way to boost the girls heart levels quickly.

* FanNickname: That the protagonist's canonical name is Pete is a little known fact since it's barely mentioned anywhere and doesn't pop up as the default name when you begin the game. He's called Jack by pretty much the whole of ''Harvest Moon'' fandom, to the point that many are surprised to learn it's not his canon name. Almost every male protagonist will invariably be dubbed "Jack" by fans, though with post-''[=IOH=]'' games more fans have begun adopting the canon names for the males sans the classic blue hatted protagonist (who is still almost never called "Pete").
