* ToughActToFollow: It was inevitable that the sequel, ''VideoGame/GunstarSuperHeroes'', would be unable to match its predecessor, as most of the criticisms toward the game stemmed from how it fared against the game that put Treasure on the map and is still seen as one of the best games for the Genesis/Mega Drive.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: It's a Treasure game, so it's to be expected, but [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoUrQDlYCVQ the Seven Force theme]] is held in nearly as much (if not more) regard as the fight it goes with for its mixture of ominous sirens, building crescendos, and pounding beat.

** The Yellow Gem level in ''Super Heroes'', at least on hard difficulty. It becomes an UnexpectedSchmupLevel where you pilot a rather large ship with the durability of tissue paper. And there will be bullets everywhere. It's just not a fun mission, but you can at least breath easy once the segment is over.

Idiot Plot is Flame Bait now. Not Ho Yay, just players mistaking a character's gender.

* HoYay: Depending on what you think Red's gender is, Blue declaring his love for Red in one storyline of ''Super Heroes''.
* IdiotPlot: In the game's backstory, the Gunstars defeated Golden Silver, sealed his body on the moon, took the four gems that powered him, and sealed them away in four separate areas. Now the bad guys want to get the gems and release Golden Silver. No one thought to put the gems somewhere secure, or better yet, destroy them completely given that you do the latter at the end of the game.

* UnntentionalUncannyValley: A few of the bosses can invoke this effect, a couple examples include Melonbread: a vaguely clown-like face with an overly animated mouth that stares at the player character. And Curry & Rice: a humanoid-like rock creature with stiff awkward animations.

** All the sprite rotation and scaling may not seem like much until you remember the Genesis lacked the Super Nintendo's Mode 7.

** ''Gunstar Super Heroes'' is no slouch, either: the Game Boy Advance is a more powerful system than the Genesis, yet this game still pushes the GBA's capabilities to their limits.

* BreatherLevel: Level five of ''Gunstar Super Heroes''. A ride down a shaft, a run across a flat level plain (with possibly dangerous gas vents that are harmless as long as you bother to shoot them before going past), a none too difficult miniboss, a space shoot 'em up with two more easy minibosses, and a quick section shooting bad guys while standing on the top of your ship. Even on Hard you've got no one to blame but yourself if you dip below 50 health....
* ContestedSequel: ''Super Heroes''. Some fans who were excited to see the original game get a sequel found themselves disappointed when they realized the game was more or less [[ItsTheSameSoItSucks a rehash of the original game]], and felt that many of the changes made weren't necessarily for the better. Fans of the game believe it's an underrated gem that was compared unfairly to its predecessor, enjoyed its added variety in its gameplay, and feel that it's a fantastic game in its own right and one of the best action titles for the GBA.

* GameBreaker:
** Chaser + Lightning, which will allow you to zap mooks and bosses without having to aim...[[{{Nerf}} unless you're playing on Hard or Expert, where the damage output renders it useless, especially against bosses]]. Alternatively, you can use Fire + Lightning, which turns your weapon into a LaserBlade that does a ludicrous amount of damage, and destroys projectiles!
** In the sequel, Chaser Lightning is a default weapon for both Red and Blue and manages to stay relevant despite losing range and power. There is also another Game Breaker: Red's Force Supercharge, which is capable of generating power faster than it uses up, winding up as a boss melter.

projectiles!

* ThatOneLevel:
** Moon 2 in ''Super Heroes''. Your helicopter takes 1/8 of the screen and flinches in place when hit by a bullet, with no MercyInvincibility. Doesn't sound too bad, but [[BulletHell try that level on Hard]] and see what happens.
** Moon 4 has plenty of difficult challenges that ''must'' be completed in order to advance, and exploration is determined by ''[[LuckBasedMission a game of dice]]'' - complete with face number four being replaced by "[[{{Whammy}} back]]" after the first roll. To add insult to injury, some places send you to another room if you happen to fall down a chasm.
** The board game was even ''worse'' in the original ''Gunstar Heroes'', where the player can only move up to ''[[RuleOfThree three]]'' spaces at a time. It's also brimmed with [[ThatOneBoss some of toughest bosses in the game]] and the second-to-last space shoves you right back to the beginning, ''[[FromBadToWorse forcing you do the board all over again]]'' (though thankfully the player will not be forced to re-fight any of the bosses they have already killed).
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Smash Daisaku in ''Super Heroes''. As before, he appears in Green's stage to throw enemies at you and is seen pointing a gun at Yellow when she's captured in the fifth stage, but [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere he runs off]] and [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse isn't seen again]]. He does appear as an optional boss in Black's stage, but some people were disappointed at how diminished his role was compared to the first game.
* ToughActToFollow: As a sequel, it was inevitable that ''Super Heroes'' would suffer from this, as most of the criticisms toward the game stemmed from how it fared against the game that put Treasure on the map and is still seen as one of the best games for the Genesis/Mega Drive.

* DifficultySpike: Stage five is arguably the hardest level in the original game because A) you have to fight through a horde of {{Mooks}} that will whittle your health down B) you have to fight Smash Daisaku, who would be hard enough if you weren't in a weakened state and C) there are no check points in the stage, which means a game over places you right back at the beginning of it all. Mind you it's also considered the BestLevelEver since you can completely cut loose against a horde of moving targets.

* PolishedPort: As usual for M2's [=3DS=] ports, ''Gunstar Heroes'' not only looks fantastic in 3D, but the game offers several new gameplay options. Gunslinger mode grants you access to all four weapons at once and allows you to switch between Free Shot and Fixed Shot with the press of a button, Mega Life Mode grants you twice as much energy, and beating the game unlocks Mega Shot Mode in which your shots are considerably more powerful.
