* NightmareFuel: A surprisingly large amount for a cartoon from the mid 1980s. Inferred genocides, animal cruelty, body horror, mind rape... oh my.

* HeyItsThatVoice: Zachary Foxx is voiced by none other than the late great Jerry Orbach, while The Chief and Captain Kidd are both voiced by the late Earl Hammond, better known as the voices of Mumm-Ra and Mon-Star on ''Thundercats'' and ''Silverhawks''. Doug Preis, who voices Shane Gooseman, also worked on ''Thundercats'' and ''Silverhawks''.

* CrowningMomentOfAwesome: Ariel: "Haven't you heard? War ''is'' deception, and illusion is a ''specialty'' of mine!"

* EnsembleDarkhorse: As Mandell put it, he intended Zach to be the protagonist, but then "Along came Goose."

* CompleteMonster: [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen The Queen of the Crowns]] starts off by ambushing Kirwin, and putting a heavy bounty on humans to every two-bit thug in the galaxy. We find out why - she's mashing the humans down for LifeEnergy to [[PoweredByAForsakenChild power constructs through which she can see, hear, and administer her Empire]]. It's not only an exceedingly painful process, [[AndIMustScream but the poor bastard is fully awake and aware of what's happened]]. We also see that she slaughtered millions on the planet of Tortuna, leaving a few, domed cities behind in a lot of wasteland. She also was hunting humans because the ''last'' race she used to power Slaverlords has been hunted to near-extinction and she needed replacements. If that wasn't bad enough, she enslaves an entire planet, making the inhabitants work in concentration camp conditions to build a massive hyperspace cannon she uses to [[DefaceOfTheMoon blow a chunk out of Earth's moon]], threatening to do worse to Earth unless they gave her 5000 humans in tribute. On a personal level, she uses the only psychocrystal she's made from a human ([[TheHero Zach's]] [[IHaveYourWife wife]]) to commit MindRape nightly on ''both of them.'' Her voice actress in the American version unfortunately sounds like a cross of Ming the Merciless and Maleneficent. The German actress comes across as far more menacing.

* FoeYay: The evil Queen of the Crown, albeit one-sided on her part, towards Zachary. Even WordOfGod commented there was some S&M vibes in how she was gloating towards him.

** Some of the show's other writers liked Buzzwang even though he was clearly just a knock off of C-3P0 from StarWars.

* CompleteMonster: What The Queen of the Crown does to Zach's wife alone would probably qualify her, but then take into account that this tech is what she uses to run '''her entire empire'''. There was also that DesolationShot in "Tortuna" where it's explained that millions once lived in what is now a desert until "the Queen came." We also see her brutal enslavement of Wolcab, with the residents rounded up into concentration camp conditions and forced to work on her WaveMotionGun.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Genocide, several varieties of MindRape, NightmareFuel, on-screen death, a DatingCatwoman (or at least shagging her) situation in "Renegade Rangers," slavery, torture, ''massive'' aversions of NeverSayDie (with the on-screen body count to back it up)...even Mandell admits the show's writing "flew over the heads of six year olds."

* AwesomeMusic: The soundtrack is a combination of prog-rock and AOR, was cooked up by the guy who went on to do ''The 4400'' and the 90's incarnation of TheOuterLimits. Cult bands FM and Refugee sang tracks on it, and when Koch asked what extras should be on the DVD, the ''unanimous'' vote was for a soundtrack.

* DarkerAndEdgier: Compared to its contemporaies like HeMan and {{Thundercats}}, and even rival SpaceWestern series like BraveStarr and SaberRider. Several of the writers had backgrounds in horror writing, and the lack of a toy company's backing allowed for greater creative freedom. * MrFanservice: Shane, Doc, and Zach all have fangirl-attracting qualities.

* ShipToShipCombat: May be the only fandom on Earth where it's ''completely {{Inverted}}.'' Despite a sizeable body of FanFic, most of the fanbase goes with the "canon" or WordOfGod 'ships; [[HappilyMarried Zach / Eliza]], [[ShipTease Goose / Niko]], and [[GiveGeeksAChance Doc / Maya]].

* TooGoodToLast: When a cartoon from the mid-eighties gets favorably compared to ''Series/{{Firefly}}''?
