** This is also part of his backstory: Edge's father was killed by a bioweapon, and he was unable to prevent it in spite of having a gun due to poor aim. However, when he used a knife to defend himself from the creature, he was able to fight it off.
*** The first creatures encountered in the game possess natural defenses against the weapons used by most of the SRF, as they are able to detect the electromagnetic fields (and possibly generate such fields as well) generated by the rail guns used by the SRF, and thus are able to evade and/or deflect the projectiles. However, since swords and other "low-tech" weapons don't rely on such things, they are much more effective.

Given that the creatures in question are giant alien space bugs, it's not quite as impossible as it might seem.
*** Although it's worth mentioning that pretty much anytime after Aeos, the justification that existed for the bugs vanishes into thin air. A good example are the Phantom Soldiers - while it is occasionally mentioned or hinted at that special weaponry is required to kill them (or at least works much better), there's nothing to stop our heroes from fighting them with guns story-wise.

Why would you need to switch to guns when low tech weapons (that the characters are comfortable with and don't need training in how to use) work just as well?

* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe : When Edge tries to express sympathy to Myuria in one cutscene where she is mourning the loss of her husband, she suggests that if he were a real man he would [[IfYouKnowWhatIMean "stop her tears"]]. This understandably makes Edge a little uncomfortable.
