The game discourages trial and error because of how much space Things take in your inventory, the fact that they go away once they're used, and the fact that it costs good money to be able to re-use them.

Removing complaints: for Big Boo, you're supposed to use the Infinijump that's introduced in this level. You can defeat Jr without either of those items. And the trumper is OUTRIGHT SHOWN IN A CUTSCENE to be used to wake up enemies, so maybe you're the problem if you missed that. Every one of the game's puzzles is hinted or requires common sense; what do you THINK you have to do when you're in a baseball stadium and are told to "play ball"? Not to mention that most have multiple solutions. And the Sticker Star is where Kersti is from, it's not the Sticker Comet, geez

Also, the solutions to some puzzles often lie in obscure non-Mario trivia & myths, such as [[spoiler:goats eating paper]]. However, the game also withholds even basic knowledge, such as bosses having timed weaknesses, the full scope of your jump and hammer field moves, and power-up blocks. This extreme overestimation of player knowledge is often the root of the game's GuideDangIt moments. It's thankfully toned down in ''Color Splash''.
