** There were some executives at Creator/WarnerBros who wanted the movie to be a continuation of ''Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy'', and discussed the idea of bringing back Creator/ChristianBale to play Batman. ** A planned appearance from Creator/JaredLeto as Comicbook/TheJoker was cut, as was a similar appearance from Comicbook/TheRiddler. Snyder ultimately decided against it because he thought it would take too much focus away from the main characters.

A script was written by Akiva Goldsman (who also wrote ''Film/IAmLegend'', hence the film existing in that film's world), and Creator/WolfgangPetersen was attached as director. They wanted Creator/JoshHartnett for Superman and Creator/ChristianBale for Batman. ** The movie was originally going to be a true sequel to ''Man of Steel'' that just happened to guest-star Batman in a major role. The inclusion of Batman convinced Snyder to begin fleshing out TheVerse a bit more by including Wonder Woman, which then led to other members of the League showing up as well. After this, it was decided that the most "logical" course of action would be to use ''Dawn of Justice'' as a lead-in for a Justice League movie.

Not a genre.

* GenreKiller: This film's underperformance, together with the critical and financial failure of ''Film/FantasticFour2015'' (both films were criticized for being needlessly dark purely for the sake of being dark) appears to have caused a decline in the trend of making DarkerAndEdgier superhero movies [[FollowTheLeader that are clearly inspired by]] ''Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy'''s own dark approach, with two subsequent DCEU movies being reworked to be LighterAndSofter and all later ones taking a more lighthearted approach to adapting their source material, excluding films that adapted source material which itself was DarkerAndEdgier (i.e., Film/{{Logan}}).

** There were some executives at Creator/WarnerBros who wanted the movie to be a continuation of ''Film/TheDarkKnightSaga'', and discussed the idea of bringing back Creator/ChristianBale to play Batman. Snyder wanted to hire Bale to play a different DC character just to hammer home that the new movie was ''not'' connected to the earlier Creator/ChristopherNolan films.

*** For ''WebVideo/AtopTheFourthWall'' fans, ''[[ComicBook/AllStarBatmanAndRobinTheBoyWonder Crazy Steve]] v [[ComicBook/SupermanAtEarthsEnd Bearded Idiot]]''Idiot]]''. Somewhat amusingly, Linkara himself refers to the film as ''Crazy Steve v Greyman: [[Film/GodzillaMothraKingGhidorahGiantMonstersAllOutAttack Giant Monsters All-Out Attack]]''[[note]]noting that the only reasons he calls Superman "Greyman" instead of "Bearded Idiot" is a), due to how grey ''Film/ManOfSteel'' was, and b), Superman would need a beard in order to Bearded Idiot[[/note]].

* RecycledScript: Though it's bound to happen when David S. Goyer wrote both movies, a common criticism is that too much of the film (especially the Batman side of things) is similar to ''Film/TheDarkKnightRises'' - as both films take influence from ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'', this complain likely would've happened regardless of who wrote it.

*** Creator/JeffreyDeanMorgan said that when ''Film/{{Watchmen}}'' came out, Creator/ZackSnyder overtly mentioned wanting to adapt ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'' and cast him as the older Batman. While the comic ends up informing a lot of the direction of the film, Morgan ended up playing Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father. In a little bit of "what could still be," in the ''ComicBook/{{Flashpoint}}'' story arc depicting a radically altered DC Universe via ForWantOfANail, Thomas Wayne was Batman after young Bruce died in that fateful alley. Should the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse ever decide to explore that story arc, Morgan may end up playing Batman yet.

Unintentional Period Piece requires the work to be at least 10 years old. Secondly, it takes a lot more than a single dated cameo.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: While using a real life figure AsHimself typically has this effect, the Ultimate Edition includes a short political commentary by Creator/JonStewart. The thing is, the movie was originally intended for release in May 2015, but was delayed to March 2016 (to avoid competition with ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' and to give more lead time to build the film franchise) and so [[TheShelfOfMovieLanguishment post production was unusually long for the film]]. Stewart had left ''Series/TheDailyShow'' in August of 2015, meaning he hadn't been the host of the show for 6 months by the time the movie was released.
