* TakenDuringTheEnding:
** At the end of ''The Fellowship of the Ring'', [[spoiler:as part of the climactic BreakingTheFellowship, Merry and Pippin are kidnapped by Saruman's Uruk-Hai. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas spend the next book trying to find them]].
** ''The Two Towers'' also ends this way, with [[spoiler:Frodo being seemingly killed by Shelob and Sam realizing at the end of the book that he is actually alive and has been taken by Sauron's forces]].

Sam, in fact, is the only major hobbit character who ''isn't'' related to any of the others - although once his children reach marriageable ages...

* TallIsIntimidating: Gandalf is, of course, already quite tall compared to hobbits. But when Bilbo starts throwing accusations that he wants the One Ring for himself, the wizard shows a glimpse of how truly intimidating he can be.
-->"Well, if you want my ring yourself, say so!" cried Bilbo. "But you won't get it. I won't give my Precious away, I tell you."\\
His hand strayed to the hilt of his small sword. Gandalf's eyes flashed.\\
"It will be my turn to get angry soon," he said. "If you say that again, I shall. Then you will Gandalf the Grey uncloaked."\\
He took a step towards the hobbit, and he seemed to grow tall and menacing; his shadow filled the little room.

Added DiffLines:

* SlidingScaleOfDivineIntervention: Doesn’t really fit on the scale. The hierarchy of divine beings cover practically the whole scale. [[{{God}} Eru]], the universe's creator, is a 2- he has a plan for existence, but feels that the cosmos as he built it will naturally reach that end without direct interference. Since the creation, he's interfered precisely ''twice''. [[CouncilOfAngels The Valar]] are 3s- they're more active in Chessmastering events, but still keep their hands largely off unless they're absolutely needed. Evil deities like [[{{Satan}} Morgoth]] and his one-time servant Sauron, as well as divine messengers like the wizards, are 4s, living among (and in some cases ruling) mortals. Tom Bombadil is a Sandbox God- essentially all powerful in his own little country, but he won't leave it or extend beyond it.

Crosswicking This Is Unforgivable example.

Added DiffLines:

* ThisIsUnforgivable: Appendix A has the following example: after Thror and his companion Nar make their way to Moria and Thror is murdered by Azog and his Orcs, Nar carries the story back to Thrain, Thror's son. Thrain wept and torn his beard, and then sat silent for seven days; after which he said, "This cannot be borne!"\\
This was the start of the War of Dwarves and Orcs, which the Appendix notes was long and deadly.

* SettingOffSong: When he leaves the Shire, Bilbo sings a stanza of "The Road Goes Ever On", about following the road away from home and being drawn into the wider world and towards an unknown destination. Later, when setting out himself, Frodo speaks the same stanza but replaces the line "Pursuing it with eager feet" with "Pursuing it with weary feet", reflecting his uncertainty about the journey he is setting off on.

* SamusIsAGirl: Dernhelm aka [[spoiler:Éowyn]]. The character does appear previously in the story, but when she disguises herself, she is referred to as a new male character, mainly because the reader sees her through Merry's point of view, until the reveal. This isn't attempted in the movies, it's clear the whole time that it's Eowyn and that Merry knows it.

** InUniverse Gollum and Bilbo both give altered versions of how the ring came into their possession, subconsciously attempting to assert their claim over it. Gollum in particular has spent so long insisting the ring was his birthday present that it borders on a case of BelievingTheirOwnLies. The similarity in their stories was what first clued Gandalf in that it was no ordinary magic ring.
