* AdultFear: Joe, Barry and Iris return home to find it in shambles, Wally missing and a message from Zoom concerning the youngest West.

* StuffedInTheFridge: Hunter reveals he convinced his Time-Remnant, aka "Jay", to actually be murdered in a gruesome fashion just to traumatize Team Flash into working towards increasing Barry's speed.

* NotSoDifferent:

** Defied by Cisco. He fears that unlocking his powers will ultimately make him DrunkOnTheDarkSide like his Earth-2 counterpart. Barry assures him that his TrueCompanions will be with him along the way.

* SinisterSmirk: When Hunter first got his powers, he gave off a look of pure dark delight when he saw his hand vibrating for the first time.

* SinsterSmirk: Following the dark matter exposure that gave him his powers and seeing his hand vibrating for the first time, Hunter gave off a look of dark delight.

* HonorBeforeReason: After Wally is safe, Barry ''still'' fulfills his part of the deal and gives Zoom speed, knowing perfectly well what kind of monster Zoom is and that he'll have trouble stopping him afterwards. In fairness, he had trouble anyway despite the tachyon device to help him.

* ForegoneConclusion: Barry missed the funeral in the ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' flashforward because of problems with Zoom, apparently the ones in this episode. After the funeral, though, he still has his speed, making it clear that he'll recover it.

* BeardnessProtectionProgram: InvertedTrope. Zoom apparently managed to hide the fact that he was notorious {{serial killer}} Hunter Zolomon by fixing up his hair and shaving his beard.

* GenreSavvy: Both the heroes and Zoom demonstrate this. The heroes know that Zoom [[ILied has never kept his word]] on his "bargains" and ends up just killing the person when he gets what he wants, so they tell him to release Wally first. Zoom [[IKnowYouKnowIKnow is likely aware that the heroes are on to this]], so he indeed complies, while still holding the rest of the heroes hostage until Barry gives up his speed.

* BookEnds: The episode begins with Barry in his most fastest, and ends with him powerless.

* DarkestHour: Zoom has successfully gained all of Barry's speed, seemingly restoring himself to full health and making him stronger then ever, Barry has been BroughtDownToNormal (for now at least), and Zoom kidnaps Caitlin at the end of the episode.

* DownerEnding: The episode ends with {{The Bad Guys Win}}ning, with Barry literally powerless and Caitlin captured.
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: Once Zoom absorbs the Speed Force, he gets ''very'' drunk on it's power.

* FamilyUnfriendlyViolence: Literally. The DownerBeginning begins with Hunter waking up from his father beating up his mother, and ends with his father [[ForcedToWatch forcing him to watch]] as he murders his mother.

* WhamEpisode: Cisco awakens the ability to reopen the breaches to Earth-2, Iris confides her feelings for Barry with Caitlin, Zoom's backstory and true identity, SerialKiller Hunter Zolomon, is revealed, Wally learns about Earth-2, Hunter reveals how both he and "Jay" were able to exist at the same time, Barry sacrifices his speed to Zoom and to wrap up the suck factor for Team Flash Caitlin is abducted by Zoom/Jay/Zolomon within the last 30-seconds.

* BeardlessProtectionProgram: Zoom apparently managed to hide the fact that he was notorious {{serial killer}} Hunter Zolomon by fixing up his hair and shaving his beard.

* ClarkKenting: Hunter Zolomon was a notorious {{serial killer}} and his face was plastered all over media outlets, so how come nobody makes a connection between him and Jay Garrick? Simple, [[BeardlessProtectionProgram Hunter had long messy hair and a beard, while Jay is clean-shaven]]. In fairness, Harry does say that Hunter vanished from the public eye after his trial.

* ClarkKenting: Hunter Zolomon was a notorious serial killer and his face was plastered all over media outlets, so how come nobody makes a connection between him and Jay Garrick? Simple, Hunter had long messy hair and a beard, while Jay is clean-shaven. In fairness, Harry does say that Hunter vanished from the public eye after his trial.

** When Barry races through the rupture to Kara's Earth, the soundtrack briefly switches to the ''Series/{{Supergirl}}'' theme.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Barry's determination to return to Earth-2 to stop Zoom just gives Zoom the opportunity he's been awaiting to steal Barry's speed, even if it's gotten stronger. Notably, both Wells and Joe warned him that it was a bad idea. Hell Zoom, said how unwise it was to let him back in Earth-1.

* ShoutOut: The mask that Hunter is forced to wear while getting electroconvulsive therapy is highly reminiscent of ''Franchise/HannibalLecter''.

** It's likely the Jay that was killed was the future version of Hunter Zolomon -- i.e. the one who actually traveled back in time in the first place -- and the "past self" is Zoom. Thus, by temporal causality, killing Zoom would kill Jay, but not vice-versa. Zolomon isn't stupid, and he likely prepared for this.
