* During World War II in Belarus, a 14-year-old boy named Flyora lived in a village with his mother and siblings and dreamed of fighting for his country. He managed to get his hands on a rifle and got drafted by Soviet partisans, who set Flyora to do menial tasks around the camp while they went off to battle. After the camp was bombarded by Germans, which left Flyora partially deaf, he traveled back to his village, where he discovered his entire family had been killed by German soldiers. From then on, Flyora wandered haphazardly throughout the country, just trying not to die, until he reached a village where he observed the extent of Nazi atrocities as they raped and burned the inhabitants alive. All the horrifying things he witnessed and experienced had the effect of drastically aging him almost overnight, turning his hair grey. He was last seen rejoining the partisans and marching off to battle.
* After joining the partisans, Flyora was predictably thrown into another harrowing scene of carnage; somehow being accompanied by a large number of co-patriots did not make it any easier for the boy to withstand the realities of war. He managed an escape by running deep into some nearby woods, upon which he heard someone call for him, and turning to find the source, saw a boy his age beckoning him and saying he knew of a safe place. Out of desperation, Flyora obeyed the boy without any consideration (such as that they'd never met before) and together the two ran further away until neither could hear the sounds of battle anymore. They kept running until the scenery changed suddenly and drastically around them, at which point the unknown boy relaxed and told Flyora he could too (though for such a traumatized kid, that's easier said than done). The boy introduced himself as Seita Yokokawa and said he had some idea of what Flyora had just gone through, given he himself had lost his whole family and ultimately his life to the war. It's perhaps a testament to Flyora's eroded sanity that he didn't seem to notice Seita basically declaring himself dead; at least, he wasn't surprised. Seita went on to explain that they were in a place called the Pantheon, and while it certainly had some awful places beset by war, Flyora would never have to worry about that ever again if he knew the right places to stay in. Flyora, shell-shocked as he was, still didn't have much of a reaction, so Seita figured maybe it was better to take him to his temple for the time being.
** Seita's sister Setsuko at first thought Flyora was scary (due to how his premature aging made him look) and hid from him until Seita coaxed her to be friendlier to their fellow victim of war. Sure enough, Setsuko quickly got used to Flyora and she was like a ray of sunshine to the broken boy, who was reminded of happier times with his family by living with both her and Seita. Seita also took his time further explaining the Pantheon in detail to him, making sure Flyora was well-acclimated, as well as talking about his and Setsuko's story. Learning that Seita and Setsuko were orphaned, then kicked out by their aunt and left to fend for themselves only to die of starvation made Flyora more mindful, as he realized that the two siblings suffered just as horribly as him all because of the war, and he was more inclined to share his own detailed story and feelings as a result. Afterwards, Flyora became more actively interested in exploring this new world around him, with Seita feelng happy that Flyora wasn't irreversibly broken by his experiences after all.
* Flyora discovered he could revive his slain family by appointing them as his Heralds and he was quick to take that chance to save them from their ignobile fate at the hands of the Germans. This also makes him determined to keep his wits about him, stay with them (to protect them) and not to go near a battlefield again, even if it's to kill despicable Nazis, which unfortunately the Pantheon has plenty of and who probably laugh at Flyora as a weakling member of an inferior race that doesn't have the stomach for the glory of war. Flyora especially hates any German officers known for committing atrocities against civilians (or have their men do so), an example of which is Heinz Böhm, the Butcher of Bologna, as well as Abelard Moller of Operation Kraken. The master sniper Erwin König, while not as cruel as the aforementioned Nazis, was responsible for killing a Soviet boy Flyora's age, showing Erwin is still lacking in scruples like so many Nazis and giving Flyora reason to fear for himself or his family should they happen to be in his line of fire. Thankfully, König's greatest enemy is the Soviet Vasily Zaytsev and he is determined to ensure that nothing bad happen to Flyora, who reminds him of the boy killed by König.
* Despite the proliferation of Nazis in the Pantheon, Flyora can rest assured that this hallowed place has no room for the likes of Hitler himself, thus depriving the Nazis from centralized leadership. That doesn't mean certain facsimiles of the infamous man can't ascend at all, as is the case with Adenoid Hynkel, but he is such an utter buffoon that none of the ascended Nazis can accept as leader. Flyora still can't help but feel apprehensive about what Hynkel might be capable of when truly roused, since it remains a fact that Hynkel remains a ''version'' of one of the most tyrannical men ever, managed to become leader of a whole country and replicated a lot of Hitler's most infamous actions; plus, engaging in silly behaviors does not mean he isn't capable of immense cruelty.
* There are other members of the Axis that gleefully sunk to depths of depravity well beyond what Flyora saw with his own eyes or even could imagine on his own. The most "sterling" example would be the Four Libertines, a quartet of high-ranking Italian fascists who took advantage of their positions to kidnap, torture and sexually abuse several teenagers close to Flyora's age. Flyora himself has become a favored subject of fantasy among the libertines, who sadistically think it would be just delightful to break the boy's mind further and debate among themselves whether torturing Flyora or torturing his once-massacred family in front of him would be the better entertainment for them. While the libertines are not as free to do as they please as in their world (due to being some of the most hated deities), they still have agents who procure victims for them, so Flyora has to remain watchful over himself and his family lest any of them get dragged into some sick nightmare where death would be mercy.
* Against all odds, there is one slightly younger German boy who also lived through World War II and whom Flyora could accept as a friend despite being on opposite sides of the conflict. That boy would be Jojo Betzler, once an enthusiastic member of the Hitler Youth who eventually came to realize that the Nazi ideology was evil and full of falsehood. Despite his young age and not being the sharpest tool in the shed, Jojo could easily recognize Flyora as a victim of Nazi tenets as well as empathize with his story, not least because of his own traumatic experience during the war, in which his mother was executed as a member of the resistance and he lost some friends and almost died himself during an attack on his town. If Flyora previously thought that Germans were all evil, learning of Jojo's story certainly showed him that was not the case.
* The Animorphs are a group of teenagers who single-handedly became the last line of defense preventing Earth from getting invaded by aliens, and whereas some people might mistake the situation as being rather whimsical, seeing as how the Animorphs' power is to transform into all manner of animals, a disillusioned veteran like Flyora is now wise enough to understand that their lives had been utterly ruined by that adventure. The Animorphs can confirm that to anybody who asks, with some of their members having died and others feeling unable to return to any semblance of normal life, to the extent that their leader Jake was last seen going on a SuicideMission. Thus it's not difficult to see how Flyora and the Animorphs are able to relate to each other despite the different ways their wars were fought; they're all hardened, traumatized ChildSoldiers in the end.
* Flyora supposes he could still have it much worse; he might have gone through a horrible and senseless hell on Earth and come very close to a painful death, but at least he came out of it with his body intact, despite prematurely aging. Some others have not been nearly as lucky, as Joe Bonham could tell him. Bonham had all his limbs, sight and hearing stolen from him by the war, making him essentially a shell of a human who would have welcomed death, only for everyone around him to ignore his wishes and leave him to linger in that abominable state. The Pantheon fortunately allowed him to be whole again upon ascension, for which he is eternally grateful. Hearing the whole tale of how Bonham felt physically and psychologically while being trapped in his own body gives Flyora nightmares of the same thing potentially having happened to him should he have been less lucky, which if anything makes him even more determined to have nothing to do with any war in the Pantheon. Bonham thinks that's a very good thing, seeing as how he now holds the same opinion of war.
* There are plenty of Soviet soldiers running around the Pantheon that a more starstruck and naive kid might have looked up to, but Flyora can't really bring himself to after everything he experienced, though at the same time he recognizes them as lines of defense against the Nazis and is grateful to them for risking their lives in such a way. Flyora instead relates more to Niko Bellic, who faced his own hell during the Yugoslav Wars and moved to Liberty City to get away from it all and start anew. Niko is not the most wholesome of characters, but Flyora finds it much easier to relate to someone who is still haunted by the ghosts of a war-torn past than any decorated hero; he might also appreciate Niko's resourcefulness in making a new and better life for himself. As for Niko himself, he might be inclined to be protective of the boy once in a while, given they went through the same experiences.

From then on, Flyora wandered haphazardly throughout the country, just trying not to die, until he reached a village where he observed the extent of Nazi atrocities as they raped and burned the inhabitants alive. All the horrifying things he witnessed and experienced had the effect of drastically aging him almost overnight, turning his hair grey. He was last seen rejoining the partisans and marching off to battle.
* After joining the partisans, Flyora was predictably thrown into another harrowing scene of carnage; somehow being accompanied by a large number of co-patriots did not make it any easier for the boy to withstand the realities of war. He managed an escape by running deep into some nearby woods, upon which he heard someone call for him, and turning to find the source, saw a boy his age beckoning him and saying he knew of a safe place. Out of desperation, Flyora obeyed the boy without any consideration (such as that they'd never met before) and together the two ran further away until neither could hear the sounds of battle anymore. They kept running until the scenery changed suddenly and drastically around them, at which point the unknown boy relaxed and told Flyora he could too (though for such a traumatized kid, that's easier said than done). The boy introduced himself as Seita Yokokawa and said he had some idea of what Flyora had just gone through, given he himself had lost his whole family and ultimately his life to the war. It's perhaps a testament to Flyora's eroded sanity that he didn't seem to notice Seita basically declaring himself dead; at least, he wasn't surprised. Seita went on to explain that they were in a place called the Pantheon, and while it certainly had some awful places beset by war, Flyora would never have to worry about that ever again if he knew the right places to stay in. Flyora, shell-shocked as he was, still didn't have much of a reaction, so Seita figured maybe it was better to take him to his temple for the time being.
** Seita's sister Setsuko at first thought Flyora was scary (due to how his premature aging made him look) and hid from him until Seita coaxed her to be friendlier to their fellow victim of war. Sure enough, Setsuko quickly got used to Flyora and she was like a ray of sunshine to the broken boy, who was reminded of happier times with his family by living with both her and Seita. Seita also took his time further explaining the Pantheon in detail to him, making sure Flyora was well-acclimated, as well as talking about his and Setsuko's story. Learning that Seita and Setsuko were orphaned, then kicked out by their aunt and left to fend for themselves only to die of starvation made Flyora more mindful, as he realized that the two siblings suffered just as horribly as him all because of the war, and he was more inclined to share his own detailed story and feelings as a result. Afterwards, Flyora became more actively interested in exploring this new world around him, with Seita feelng happy that Flyora wasn't irreversibly broken by his experiences after all.
* Flyora discovered he could revive his slain family by appointing them as his Heralds and he was quick to take that chance to save them from their ignobile fate at the hands of the Germans. This also makes him determined to keep his wits about him, stay with them (to protect them) and not to go near a battlefield again, even if it's to kill despicable Nazis, which unfortunately the Pantheon has plenty of and who probably laugh at Flyora as a weakling member of an inferior race that doesn't have the stomach for the glory of war. Flyora especially hates any German officers known for committing atrocities against civilians (or have their men do so), an example of which is Heinz Böhm, the Butcher of Bologna, as well as Abelard Moller of Operation Kraken. The master sniper Erwin König, while not as cruel as the aforementioned Nazis, was responsible for killing a Soviet boy Flyora's age, showing Erwin is still lacking in scruples like so many Nazis and giving Flyora reason to fear for himself or his family should they happen to be in his line of fire. Thankfully, König's greatest enemy is the Soviet Vasily Zaytsev and he is determined to ensure that nothing bad happen to Flyora, who reminds him of the boy killed by König.
* Despite the proliferation of Nazis in the Pantheon, Flyora can rest assured that this hallowed place has no room for the likes of Hitler himself, thus depriving the Nazis from centralized leadership. That doesn't mean certain facsimiles of the infamous man can't ascend at all, as is the case with Adenoid Hynkel, but he is such an utter buffoon that none of the ascended Nazis can accept as leader. Flyora still can't help but feel apprehensive about what Hynkel might be capable of when truly roused, since it remains a fact that Hynkel remains a ''version'' of one of the most tyrannical men ever, managed to become leader of a whole country and replicated a lot of Hitler's most infamous actions; plus, engaging in silly behaviors does not mean he isn't capable of immense cruelty.
* There are other members of the Axis that gleefully sunk to depths of depravity well beyond what Flyora saw with his own eyes or even could imagine on his own. The most "sterling" example would be the Four Libertines, a quartet of high-ranking Italian fascists who took advantage of their positions to kidnap, torture and sexually abuse several teenagers close to Flyora's age. Flyora himself has become a favored subject of fantasy among the libertines, who sadistically think it would be just delightful to break the boy's mind further and debate among themselves whether torturing Flyora or torturing his once-massacred family in front of him would be the better entertainment for them. While the libertines are not as free to do as they please as in their world (due to being some of the most hated deities), they still have agents who procure victims for them, so Flyora has to remain watchful over himself and his family lest any of them get dragged into some sick nightmare where death would be mercy.
* Against all odds, there is one slightly younger German boy who also lived through World War II and whom Flyora could accept as a friend despite being on opposite sides of the conflict. That boy would be Jojo Betzler, once an enthusiastic member of the Hitler Youth who eventually came to realize that the Nazi ideology was evil and full of falsehood. Despite his young age and not being the sharpest tool in the shed, Jojo could easily recognize Flyora as a victim of Nazi tenets as well as empathize with his story, not least because of his own traumatic experience during the war, in which his mother was executed as a member of the resistance and he lost some friends and almost died himself during an attack on his town. If Flyora previously thought that Germans were all evil, learning of Jojo's story certainly showed him that was not the case.
* The Animorphs are a group of teenagers who single-handedly became the last line of defense preventing Earth from getting invaded by aliens, and whereas some people might mistake the situation as being rather whimsical, seeing as how the Animorphs' power is to transform into all manner of animals, a disillusioned veteran like Flyora is now wise enough to understand that their lives had been utterly ruined by that adventure. The Animorphs can confirm that to anybody who asks, with some of their members having died and others feeling unable to return to any semblance of normal life, to the extent that their leader Jake was last seen going on a SuicideMission. Thus it's not difficult to see how Flyora and the Animorphs are able to relate to each other despite the different ways their wars were fought; they're all hardened, traumatized ChildSoldiers in the end.
* Flyora supposes he could still have it much worse; he might have gone through a horrible and senseless hell on Earth and come very close to a painful death, but at least he came out of it with his body intact, despite prematurely aging. Some others have not been nearly as lucky, as Joe Bonham could tell him. Bonham had all his limbs, sight and hearing stolen from him by the war, making him essentially a shell of a human who would have welcomed death, only for everyone around him to ignore his wishes and leave him to linger in that abominable state. The Pantheon fortunately allowed him to be whole again upon ascension, for which he is eternally grateful. Hearing the whole tale of how Bonham felt physically and psychologically while being trapped in his own body gives Flyora nightmares of the same thing potentially having happened to him should he have been less lucky, which if anything makes him even more determined to have nothing to do with any war in the Pantheon. Bonham thinks that's a very good thing, seeing as how he now holds the same opinion of war.
* There are plenty of Soviet soldiers running around the Pantheon that a more starstruck and naive kid might have looked up to, but Flyora can't really bring himself to after everything he experienced, though at the same time he recognizes them as lines of defense against the Nazis and is grateful to them for risking their lives in such a way. Flyora instead relates more to Niko Bellic, who faced his own hell during the Yugoslav Wars and moved to Liberty City to get away from it all and start anew. Niko is not the most wholesome of characters, but Flyora finds it much easier to relate to someone who is still haunted by the ghosts of a war-torn past than any decorated hero; he might also appreciate Niko's resourcefulness in making a new and better life for himself. As for Niko himself, he might be inclined to be protective of the boy once in a while, given they went through the same experiences.
