Cry For The Devil a YMMV trope

* CryForTheDevil: See FreudianExcuse, many of the villains in this series are given very tragic backstories, which the novels elaborate on.

It\'s probably best to move No Biological Sex up to the whole Evillious since the forest spirits feature in more than the Story of Evil

* NoBiologicalSex: Forest spirits don't have genders, hence why Michaela [[JapanesePronouns uses "boku" as a spirit, and "Watashi" as a human]] during the ''Story of Evil''. Elluka nonetheless considers the spirits to be female.

* ReligionofEvil: The Behemo Sect of the Levin religion is, at least, treated this way in-universe for its demon-worship. During ''Original Sin Story'' Held followers were also accused of following this, their god branded evil by Magic Kingdom Levianta.

* LastDisrespects: In Cloture of Yellow, one of the main characters, Elluka Clockworker, attends the funeral of Leonhart Avadonia, apparently just to call him an idiot, and leaves.

The Evillious Chronicles is a dark-fantasy multi-media franchise created by Akuno-P, or "mothy," a Japanese producer famous for his songs made using the {{Vocaloid}} program. Although mothy started the series by releasing songs with simplistic one-picture videos such as ''Wordplay'' and ''The Daughter of Evil'', as his popularity and budget boomed he's produced more varied [=PVs=] of much higher quality and using more Vocaloids. Wordplay, his first known Evillious song, was released in March 2008.

More than songs, mothy has conveyed the narrative of the Evillious Chronicles through light novels, databooks, short stories, mangas, poems, [[WordofGod interviews, and cryptic tweets.]] The narrative concerns the fantasy continent of Bolganio, primarily its western half, called Evillious. Over a one thousand year period, the franchise covers multiple stories where people on this continent are affected by Demons representing the SevenDeadlySins. Many stories in the franchise draw from western aesthetic, mythology, and folk lore.

[[folder: Tropes Related to the whole Evillious Chronicles]]
* TheAbridgedSeries: The Evillious Chronicles now has [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JMH9TfLero&feature=g-all-lik one]]
* AerithAndBob / AsLongAsItSoundsForeign: mothy really tries to put in a "Western" feel (including the style choice of his songs), but the names...sometimes just sound plain bizarre even from a Western standpoint. Clarith? Gallerian? Yukina?
** That's not even getting into Milky, [[BilingualBonus Pollo]], and ''Neruneru.''
* AllThereInTheManual: Many of the songs are given more detail in mothy’s albums, several of which have an informative booklet containing either exposition or in-character commentary.
** The two novel series have also received their own databooks containing miscellaneous info on the setting, character aftermaths, creator interviews, English spellings, and other trivia.
* AfterTheEnd: Desert Bluebird hints at taking place in this sort of scenario, mentioning ruined towns and nuclear radiation.
* AnachronicOrder: The reason why so many fans have trouble connecting all the dots of the series. Few realized mothy was telling this kind of narrative until ''Chrono Story''.
* AnimatedActors: mothy seems to treat the Vocaloids this way, as each is credited for the role of the character in the [=PVs=] they're in. For example, Len playing both Allen and Lemy in Servant of Evil and Five the Pierrot respectively.
**Some Vocaloids who don’t appear in the song are even credited for lighting and props.
* AntiVillain: A common character type in mothy’s works; as a more common example, Allen in ''Story of Evil'' is a [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type II]].
* AnyoneCanDie: Particularly since the story goes on for hundreds of years, where most characters from the previous story arc have died of old age by the time the next one comes around.
* ArcWords: "Lu Li La," a lullaby that often appears in various songs of the series.
* AristocratsAreEvil: A very common trope, with [[HaremSeeker Sateriasis Venomania]], [[TheCaligula Riliane]], and [[ImAHumanitarian Banica Conchita]] as some of the worst examples.
* CanonWelding: According to mothy he began to concept a larger narrative after the release of a few of his songs, and with songs like Heartbeat Clocktower and Chrono Story he began making it more apparent to the fans.
* ContinuityPorn: Comes with the CanonWelding above, mothy’s later songs feature some of this.
* CrapsackWorld: Evillious certainly qualifies, with all the tragedies that happen in a thousand year stretch.
* CrystalDragonJesus: The Levin religion is very similar to Christianity despite being polytheistic, with similar symbolism and teachings.
* DemonicPossession: Unless you’re completely carefree or a powerful mage, you are at risk for being possessed if you come in contact with the Demons of Sin. Most of the problems in the series are due to this happening as the result of a DealWithTheDevil or someone else's interference, shown in the ''Seven Deadly Sins Series'' and the ''Story of Evil''.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Common among characters in the chronicles and justified by the times they take place in. In particular, the Clockwork Doll and The Master of the Graveyard wear this the most (though the Doll kind of stops wearing them after becoming the Master of the Court).
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: Several in Bolganio:
** Lucifenia is France.
** Elphegort is Germany.
** Marlon is Great Britain.
** Asmodean is Eastern Europe with Arabic elements.
** Beelzenia is Rome, Spain or Italy, depending on the year.
** Levianta is Russia.
** Snakeland is Japan.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Frequently in the songs.
** ''Story of Evil'': In ''Daughter of Evil'', the narration points out that Allen's face strongly resembles Riliane's. This foreshadows both the revelation that they are, in fact, twins, and [[spoiler: their TwinSwitch]].
** In ''Chrono Story'': There are three women who appear at the beginning of the song; blonde, pink, and black haired respectively. [[spoiler: These women are the forms that Elluka took across the series; her original form, Lukana Octo's body wearing her ''Story of Evil'' sorceress garb, and Kayou Sudou's original body.]]
** Among Venomania's victims are Tette Cetera, a soldier, Neruneru Nerune, a spy, and Rindo Blum, a nun. [[spoiler: In Story of Evil, Chartette Langley eventually becomes a unit leader in Beelzenia's military, while Ney Futapie was a spy for Marlon all along. Riliane also became a nun in her old age.]]
** Around the 0:26 mark in the PV of ''Moonlit Bear,'' there's blood on the hem of Eve Moonlit's dress. [[spoiler: At the end of the song, we find out that she murdered Hansel and Gretel's mother.]]
** Just before the beginning of the actual song in the video for ''Miniature Garden Girl,'' the sound of someone winding a clockwork key is heard. [[spoiler: The song ends with the reveal that Gallerian Marlon's "daughter" is actually a clockwork doll.]]
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: Given that this series spans about a thousand years, this isn’t surprising.
* IdenticalGrandson: Common in the series, partially due to several being represented by the same Vocaloid and so retaining their appearance. This phenomenon is even [[DiscussedTrope discussed]] in ''Gloom of Held''.
* IDontLikeTheSoundOfThatPlace: Much of the franchise takes place in a country or region named after a demon that's associated with one of the sins: Asmodean (Asmodeus), Beelzenia (Beelzelbub), Lucifenia (Lucifer), Levianta (Leviathan), and Elphegort (Belphegor), Marlon (Mammon), and at one point an empire named Tasan (Satan).
** This is all within a region called ''Evil''lious.
** In Marlon’s northern half is a region called ''Blood Pool''.
* {{Immortality}}: Elluka, Hansel, Gretel, and Gumillia. The twins are confirmed to be BornAgainImmortality.
* JigsawPuzzlePlot: This causes a lot of confusion among fans. Non-Japanese fans have an even harder time with this, as the franchise is primarily in Japanese and some pieces of the puzzle are revealed a lot later or less accurately.
*LouisCypher: See IDontLikeTheSoundOfThatPlace.
* LyricalDissonance: Really common in a lot of the franchise’ songs.
** Red Shoe Parade really takes the cake though.
* MadScientist: Seth Twiright as well as [[spoiler: Adam]] in ''Original Sin Story'', but one also features in ''Full Moon Laboratory''.
* MoralityKitchenSink: Most of the characters are some shade of gray, with a few irretrievably evil individuals and the occasional genuinely good person thrown into the mix.
* MoodSwinger: Elluka Clockworker. She's referred to as "the whimsical sorceress" for a reason.
* MoodWhiplash: Halfway through ''Playing With Words''. Also, the order of the songs in the albums can cause this as well; for example, in the CD ''Evils Theater'', ''Conchita, the Epicurean Daughter of Evil'' is immediately followed by ''Ten Minute Love''.
** Which is quickly followed by ''[[GriefSong Regret Message]]'' making it a double example.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with the name Mikina; Mikina Olliba is a widow who is enchanted by Venomania, while Mikina Freesis is the wife of Keel and mother of Yukina. In some English translations this is played straight due to SpellMyNameWithAnS.
** Also averted with the name Riliane; first there was Empress Riliane Roses, then Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche, and (in some translations) the soldier Riliane Mouchet.
** Averted again with the name Bruno, although in the case of one it was a code name.
* PeopleOfHairColor: Played straight with Elphegort but subverted everywhere else, where there’s more ethnic diversity
* PimpedOutDress: Several throughout the Chronicles, though Riliane, Master of the Graveyard, and Margarita Blankenheim's dresses are the best examples.
* POVSequel: Quite common. Particularly so with the ''Story of Evil'', where ''Daughter of White'', ''Servant of Evil'', and ''Wooden Girl ~Thousand-Year Wiegenlied~'' can all be seen as one to ''Daughter of Evil''.
* {{Reincarnation}}: A common theme in ''Story of Evil'' as well as a plot point for Hansel and Gretel, who keep being reincarnated throughout the franchise.
** In ''Prefacio of Blue'', the Master of the Graveyard calls King Kyle "this era's Soul of Adam". Take that as you will.
* ReligionofEvil: The Behemo Sect of the Levin religion is, at least, treated this way in-universe for its demon-worship.
* ReusedCharacterDesign: The same Vocaloids are used to represent multiple different characters. [[IdenticalGrandson Justified]] in [[{{Reincarnation}} several cases]].
* [[SinsOfOurFathers Sins of Our Ancestor]]: The mistreatment of Venomania’s descendants feature in nearly all parts of the story.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: For a long time the fanbase referred to the characters from the ''Story of Evil'' by their Vocaloid names (Rin, Len, Miku, etc) before the canon names in the novels (Riliane, Allen, Michaela, etc) became widespread. As demonstrated below, multiple debates also occurred on the proper English spelling of the canon character names, with many more examples than this listed.
** There used to be confusion on whether Banica's name was "Vanika" or "Banika" before WordOfGod explained it was a pun on the word for cannibal, ''caniba''. Amusingly, in-universe Banica's folklore persona is called Vanika.
** There was also a debate on Allen's last name being correctly spelled as "Avadonia" or "Abbadonia", although this debate tended to ignore [[FanDumb the way his name was actually spelled in katakana, which specifically represented the 'v' sound.]]
** [[AllThereInTheManual Entr'acte of Evil: The Daughter of Evil Worldguide as well as Epic of Evil: The Daughter of Evil Fanbook]] cleared up many debates on how some of the names, such as Riliane, Clarith, or Germaine, were supposed to be spelled.
** "Lily" Mouchet's full name is often debated as either Liliane or Riliane. On one hand, her name is said to be the same as the Daughter of Evil's, which is why she strongly prefers her nickname. However, her nickname works better with Liliane than with Riliane, even though both are spelled the same in Japanese. Complicating matters further is that both women were named after a common ancestor, Riliane Roses. Since the Daughter of Evil's name has been officially written as Riliane, it should follow that the other names are Riliane Roses and Riliane Mouchet, but Liliane remains very popular for the latter.
** The Clockwork Lullaby; no one is sure if it's spelled "Lu Li La" or "Ru Ri Ra".
* SplitPersonality: The protagonist of ''Blood-Stained Switch''.
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Most of this series, if not all of it, takes place in a realm reminiscent of the time before therapists were really thought of. But still, people like [[JerkassWoobie Sateriasis Venomania]] could have really used one.
* TwistEnding: This trope is used liberally in the Chronicles, particularly the songs—several are quite disturbing, such as [[spoiler: Kayo Sudou’s "lover" really not knowing her at all.]]
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: In the Story of Evil, mothy has plenty of these; for a few examples, Germaine’s backstory and how she was adopted by Leonhart was to be touched on in ''Praeludium of Red'', the song ''Kept Waiting for a Response'' was supposed to detail the end moments of [[spoiler: Riliane in the monastery]], and there are some cases of stories that were cut from earlier material but released later, such as ''Retrouver of Silver'' originally planned to play out in ''Clôture of Yellow''.
** ''Abandoned on a Moonlit Night'' apparently was going to be called "Zoo Detention" with, presumably, a completely different plot.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Elluka Clockworker certainly doesn't...
* WikiRule: The Evillious Chronicles has [[http://theevilliouschronicles.wikia.com/wiki/The_Evillious_Chronicles_Wiki quite an extensive one]]. Considering how [[JigsawPuzzlePlot confusing the series is]], this is [[TropesAreNotBad probably for the best]].
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Naturally, as most of the main characters are based on Vocaloids, down to the hair color.
** While most of the countries have plenty of people with natural hair colors—the main characters arguably being exceptions—Elphegort's entire population has green hair.

[[folder: Tropes Related to the Original Sin Story]]
* AdultFear: Eve Moonlit [[spoiler: stealing twin children from their mother and then killing said mother to keep them.]]
*ArcSymbol: "Red fruits," representing Hansel and Gretel, show up in some of the [=PVs=].
* ArcWords: In ''Project 'Ma''', the opening phrase "This is the story of the beginning. Where should I start? My name is _____, the best _____ in this country..." are sung three times.
* ArtificialHuman: The Ghoul children of Levianta are this, born in-vitro and supposedly only needing a mother to carry them initially.
* BackFromTheDead: Elluka after Kiril [[spoiler: uses the Sin to revive her,]] this being the beginning of her long life of immortality.
* DarkReprise: ''Recollective Music Box'' receives one in a slower and sadder remix sung from the perspective of Kiril Clockworker. The melody also shows up in ''Survival 'Ma' -Who Will Survive?-'' as part of the musical break [[spoiler: before Irina kills Elluka.]]
* EverybodysDeadDave: Elluka, following the Levianta Catastrophe, awakens to find the whole country destroyed and everyone she knew either dead or missing.
* FantasticNuke: The Sin device. It's destruction (that caused the Levianta Catastrophe), rendered Levianta unfit for life, with no plants or animals growing, and even affected the neighboring countries’ productivity. It took nearly 200 years for people to come back to live in there.
* {{Lunacy}}: A running theme in both ''Moonlit Bear and Abandoned on a Moonlit Night''.
* FracturedFairyTale: Hansel and Gretel in ''Abandoned on a Moonlit Night''.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: Eve]] in ''Moonlit Bear''.
* HowDoYouLikeThemApples: The events that transpire in ''Moonlit Bear'' are heavy in apple-related imagery, which isn’t the last of the [[Literature/BookOfGenesis Biblical themes]] used in this series.
* IronicEcho: In ''Escape of Salmhofer the Witch'', [[spoiler:"My children are nowhere to be found."]]
* MakeItLookLikeAnAccident / NeverSuicide: In ''Survival 'Ma''', [[spoiler: Irina kills Milky and Ly through these methods. One of them is sent off of a cliff, and it's claimed that she simply tripped and fell. Another one is found hanged, and it's alleged that she killed herself because of the grief the fighting caused her.]]
* MurderByCremation: Hansel and Gretel come across a witch and shove her into the oven. Oh, and [[spoiler: that "witch" was actually their adoptive mother]].
* NostalgicMusicbox: Fittingly, this is used in the first verse of ''Recollective Music Box''.
* OffingTheOffspring: Attempted in ''Abandoned on a Moonlit Night''; where the twins are left behind in the forest.
* OminousMusicBoxTune: The beginning of the instrumental ''Prophet Merry-Go-Round''.
* {{Ouroboros}}: In the PV of ''Escape of the Salmhofer the Witch'', two ouroboros symbols are seen at the end, probably [[spoiler: representing the "Twin Gods".]]
* PsychoticSmirk: Meta Salmhofer has this expression at one point in the PV for ''The Escape of Salmhofer the Witch''.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Eve Moonlit for half a second in the PV of ''Moonlit Bear.''
* ScienceFantasy: The science part is most heavily emphasized in this era.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: The only reason Ly Li was allowed to become part of Project 'Ma'.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Hansel and Gretel, killing their adoptive parents.
* SeparatedAtBirth: Pale Noël and Seth Twiright.
* TooDumbToLive: Meta, at least after leaving the Institute. Honestly, who leaves their twin babies alone in the forest in the ''middle of the night?!''
* WhamLine: Adam delivers one to Eve at the end of ''Moonlit Bear''
** [[spoiler: "Please return these children to their true mother's side".]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Tropes Related to the Seven Deadly Sins Series]]
* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: Gallerian Marlon.
* AbusiveParents: There’s plenty of examples in this series: [[ParentalNeglect Venomania]] and [[MyBelovedSmother Conchita's]] so far had the most devastating effects.
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: Like in the ''Story of Evil'', each story so far has ended with a scene involving Gallerian Marlon, hundreds of years later.
* ArrangedMarriage: Several, all of which invariably turn sour. Sateriasis and Gumina for the Lust arc, Banica and Carlos for the Gluttony arc, Riliane and Kyle for the Pride arc, Margarita and Caspar for the Sloth arc….seems like mothy is trying to tell the audience something.
* ArcWords: "Now, [so and so]" at the beginning of each PV. Interestingly, the Pride song is the only one where it's spoken aloud.
* ArtifactOfDoom: The vessels used by the Demons of Sin; [[{{Lust}} the Venom Sword]], [[{{VillainousGlutton}} the Glass of Conchita]], [[{{Pride}} the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia]], [[{{Sloth}} the Clockworker's Doll]], [[{{Envy}} Kayo's Scissors]] (previously the Twin Swords of Levianta), [[{{Greed}} the Marlon Spoon]], and [[{{Wrath}} the Golden Key]].
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler: Gallerian's daughter is actually a clockwork doll; his real daughter died with her mother in an accident several years prior to Judgement of Corruption.]]
* {{Autocannibalism}}: The eventual fate of Banica Conchita.
* BadBoss: Banica Conchita is shown to be one, hence why all fourteenth chefs before Joseph got fed up with her behavior and were "punished" by being killed and eaten for it.
* BadSanta: Julia often goes by her nickname "Santa", and she played a role in Margarita's crimes.
* BattleButler: Gumina has one called Carol Shields; not only is she an expert at martial arts, but her loyalty to Gumina [[UndyingLoyalty prioritizes higher]] than her brainwashing to Venomania.
* BilingualBonus: In ''Gift from the Princess who Brought Sleep'', the word "Gift" appears to be a case of GratuitousEnglish, sung in Engrish by Margarita. However, [[spoiler: it’s actually a case of GratuitousGerman, as "Gift" refers to her poison.]]
* BittersweetEnding: Many of the arcs in this series end this way, particularly in the novels; while the [[ArcVillain Arc Villains]] that had been causing the problems are dead at the end of the story, [[spoiler: Elluka fails repeatedly to find and seal the vessels of sin that corrupted them in the first place.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[MonsterClown Lemy Abelard]] is implied to have been brainwashed by Julia.
* BodySurf: Elluka does this twice in this series, swapping bodies with Lukana Octo and then Kayo Sudou. Irina does this to an even greater extent, coming in with a new body/medium each time she reappears.
* BookEnds: The ''Evil Food Eater Conchita'' novel begins and ends with a waiter in a restaurant, who has been recounting the whole story to an unknown patron.
* BrokenBird: Elluka Clockworker is this in the series as a result of ''Original Sin Story''.
* CainAndAbel: Played with: [[spoiler: Cherubim killed the original Sateriasis, but it turned out that the original Sateriasis was ''also'' planning to kill him.]]
* TheCaligula: Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche (AKA "The Daughter of Evil")
* ChildByRape: All of it, of course, from Sateriasis Venomania. Lukana, Maylis, Hakua, and Mikulia are only the known women pregnant, but there were definitely others. Venomania’s lineage is the most widespread one in the series.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Duke Venomania loved Gumina, but she had scorned him in the past, and while she was in his harem during the song, she was under his charms like the others; once they were broken, she walked away from him as he died.
** Margarita Felix and Caspar Blankenheim were childhood friends and after growing up they married each other. But while Margarita did love him, Caspar ''only'' married her for her fortune.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Kayo Sudou takes this to [[{{Green Eyed Monster}} disturbing]] extremes.
* ClockworkCreature: [[spoiler: Gallerian's "daughter"]].
* CoolMask: The Master of the Hellish Yard has this.
* CreepyChild: Pierrot. With Banica's servants it's subverted; they appear to be children but are actually in their twenties. [[PsychopathicManchild Although that doesn't make them less creepy…]]
* CryForTheDevil: See FreudianExcuse, many of the villains in this series are given very tragic backstories, which the novels elaborate on.
* DealWithTheDevil: Venomania and Conchita have been shown to do this directly with their Demon of Sin.
** [[spoiler: Gallerian refuses one made by the Master of the Hellish Yard because it would cost him money.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Margarita in ''Gift from the Princess Who Brought Sleep'' definitely crosses this, but it's unclear at which point.
* DespairSpeech: The final verse of ''Gift from the Princess Who Brought Sleep''. The first half doubles as a MotiveRant.
* DisguisedInDrag: Kachess, in order to save Yufina.
* DoomedByCanon / ForegoneConclusion: The outcomes of some of the novels are already known to people who have watched the songs, though many new details about the story are revealed instead.
** On another note, because of the ''Story of Evil'' the audience already knows [[spoiler: Elluka fails to collect and seal the Venom Sword or Glass of Conchita.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: Margarita Blankenheim. Early in his own novel, [[spoiler: Cherubim was about to do this.]]
* DwindlingParty: Père Noël is a villainous version, as its few members begin dying off or fleeing the organization for various reasons.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Venomania tries to do this as he confesses his love for Gumina, although it's subverted--he was unable to say it out loud due to a lack of breath.
* EvilIsSexy:
** Invoked by Duke Venomania.
** In ''Five the Pierrot'', [[EvilMentor Julia]] [[TheCorrupter Abelard]] is referred to as a "sexy beauty".
* {{Expy}}: Ma of this and the ''Clockwork Lullaby Series'' bears a strong resemblance to [[Manga/XxxHolic Yuuko Ichihara]], though decidedly more morally ambiguous.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Banica Conchita.
* ForHappiness: Margarita's motive. Whether or not she's telling the truth is debatable.
* FreudianExcuse: Many of the villains of the series have one, detailed in the novels and referenced in the [=PV=]s.
** For the exact list: If Conchita [[spoiler: didn't finish her food, she'd be harshly punished]]; Venomania [[spoiler: was rejected by his childhood friend (and pretty much everyone else) for his hideousness as well as horrifically neglected by his father]]; Margarita [[spoiler: was manipulated and used by everyone in her life]]; Riliane [[spoiler: was possessed twice in childhood and forced in a position of authority at a young age]].
* GodivaHair: Mikulia Greeonio in the PV for ''Flower of the Plateau''.
* GoldDigger: Caspar, who married Margarita Blankenheim because she was the daughter of a doctor and thus had a lot of wealth, is a male version of this.
* GoryDiscretionShot: Some of Conchita's delicious [[ImAHumanitarian (not)]] dishes are censored with mosaics, with the names either being partially censored out or even entirely censored.
* GottaCatchThemAll: The fragments of sin that were scattered across the world. Although Elluka's quest gets the most focus, Gallerian is trying to fulfill his own dreams by collecting them for Ma.
* HandsomeLech: Duke Venomania
* HangingJudge: Gallerian Marlon (but only if you can't pay him enough).
* HaremSeeker: Duke Venomania
* TheHedonist: Duke Venomania and Conchita even more so.
** The fact that they are related won't surprise anyone.
* IconicItem: The Sins each have one:
** [[FlowerMotifs The Flower]] and [[FreudWasRight the Venom Sword]] for Lust.
** [[HowDoYouLikeThemApples The Seed]] and [[PoweredByAForsakenChild Glass of Conchita]] for Gluttony.
** [[AllThatGlitters The Stone]] and [[{{Narcissist}} The Four Mirrors of Lucifenia]] for Pride.
** [[WindIsGreen The Wind]] and [[ClockworkCreature The Clockworker’s Doll]] for Sloth.
** [[MakingASplash The Spring]] and [[ImprobableWeaponUser Kayo's Scissors]] for Envy.
** [[DishingOutDirt The Soil]] and [[StealthPun The Marlon Spoon]] for Greed.
** [[ArcSymbol The Forest]] and [[CoolKey The Golden Key]] for Wrath.
* IfICantHaveYou: [[spoiler: Kayo resorts to this after three instances of MurderTheHypotenuse]] in ''Tailor of Enbizaka''. Additionally, in ''Gift of the Princess who Brought Sleep'', [[spoiler: Margarita's husband, who only married her for the dowry and cheats on her often, is the first victim of her poison]].
* IHaveManyNames: Many people in the chronicle are known to have many aliases and RedBaron, but special mention goes to Irina Clockworker, who is known as [[spoiler: I.R., Abyss I.R., ABC-IR, I. Santa, and Julia Abelard]].
* ImAHumanitarian: Banica Conchita
** [[spoiler: {{I Taste Delicious}}]]: This too...
* ImprobableAge: WordOfGod places Gallerian at a rather young age to be a high-ranking judge.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: [[spoiler: Kayo Sudou murders four people with ''sewing scissors'']].
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Duke Venomania seems to have this.
* TheInfiltration: Elluka joins Père Noël under an alias, but when she tries to get Lemy to leave, he instead reveals her betrayal to Julia, and Elluka goes missing the next day. [[spoiler: However, her apprentice Gumillia was still on the inside and thus able to carry out her orders to kill Lemy.]]
* KarmicDeath / DeathByIrony: Severa of the [[ArcVillain Arc Villains]] get this;
** In ''Evil Food Eater Conchita'', the titular character [[spoiler: ''eats herself'']].
** In ''The Lunacy of Duke Venomania'', the duke is killed by [[spoiler: a man dressed like a woman]].
** In ''Judgement of Corruption'', Marlon is [[spoiler: sent to Hell with the ''exact same words he gave criminals'']].
** In ''Gift from the Princess who Brought Sleep'', Margarita [[spoiler: commits suicide by drinking the poison she had given to everyone]].
* KnightTemplarParent: Gallerian Marlon.
* LadyKillerInLove: Venomania is in love with his childhood friend Gumina even as he's building a harem.
* {{Lolicon}}[=/=]MayDecemberRomance: In the fourth verse of ''Tailor Shop on Enbizaka,'' Kayo Sudou sees her boyfriend buying a yellow hairpin for a girl "that looks much too young", saying, "What do you think you're doing? You really have no boundaries." [[spoiler: Subverted when we find out the yellow hairpin girl was the man's ''daughter,'' not his other lover.]]
* TheMagicGoesAway: It's mentioned in the Lunacy novel that after the Catastrophe, people with magical talent became scarcer, until magic became no more than a myth in the ''Story of Evil''. Lukana seems to be one of the few people with considerable magical talent left by 137 EC.
* MasochistsMeal: Conchita, almost directly after making her DealWithTheDevil
* MostWritersAreWriters: There's Ma, who presents herself as a playwright in Gallerian's time.
* MonsterClown: Lemy is a surprisingly cute example in ''Five the Pierrot''.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: This happens three times in ''Tailor of Enbizaka'', [[spoiler: although two of them were actually the man's daughters]].
* ObliviouslyEvil:
** Lemy / Pierrot in ''Five the Pierrot''. He believes that he's fulfilling his mother's wishes by "killing all of the bad children in the world", not realizing that it's wrong.
* ObsessedWithFood: Banica Conchita, to an extreme degree.
* OhCrap: Has appeared a few times;
** In ''The Lunacy of Duke Venomania'', Sateriasis has this expression in the song when [[spoiler: Kachess stabs him]]. In the novels, he has this when [[spoiler: the Demon abandons him to die.]]
* OffingTheOffspring: [[spoiler: Mikulia kills her son just to make sure that no one finds out [[ReallyGetsAround her secret]]]].
** Subverted with [[spoiler: Banica, who almost eats her baby but decides not to at the last minute.]]
* QuestionableConsent: The entirety of Duke Venomania's harem.
* ReallyGetsAround: Venomania. Later in life one of his victims, Mikulia, was like this too. She was ''less'' proud of it though.
* ReplacementGoldfish: [[spoiler: The Clockwork Doll, for Gallerian's real daughter]].
* ReverseMole: [[spoiler: Elluka and Gumilia after joining Pere Noel.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: Gallerian Marlon’s MO.
* SelfMadeOrphan: In ''Gift from the Princess Who Brought Sleep'', [[spoiler: Margarita's parents are among the victims of her poison.]] Venomania, as well.
* SexMontage: The PV for "The Lunacy of Duke of Venomania’’ shows the many conquests of the Duke, along with lists showing their name, age, and occupation before they "went missing." [[{{Lolicon}} Disturbingly, some ages are censored.]]
* SkewedPriorities: PlayedForDrama in ''Flower of the Plateau''. Mikulia cares more about keeping her secret than about [[spoiler: her son's life]].
* SlasherSmile: Gallerian seems to be fond of this, despite his more reserved manner in front of non-convicted criminals.
** Banica also makes one in an illustration from her novel.
* SmugSnake: Riliane, as well as Venomania, are this in their respective arcs.
** The ''Judgement of Corruption Side Story'' manga shows Gallerian dealing with one of these.
* StalkerWithACrush: [[spoiler: ''Kayo Sudou'']]
** According to WordOfGod, her name is even [[MeaningfulName a pun on stalker]].
* StepfordSmiler: Margarita Blankenheim in ''Gift From Princess Sleep-Bringer'' and Mikulia Greonio in ''Flower of the Plateau''.
** StepfordSuburbia: What Margarita wanted Toragay to become.
* SuicideIsPainless: [[spoiler: Conchita ends up eating herself because she's the last "edible" meal left in her castle. She actually seems rather pleased that she got to taste everything in the world.]]
* TangledFamilyTree:
** Nearly everyone is related to [[ReallyGetsAround Duke Venomania]].
* ThisWasHisTrueForm: A minor example; after the Demon [[spoiler: leaves his body, Venomania's face returns to its deformed state.]]
* TimeSkip: Each novel and song takes place upwards of a hundred years after the latter.
* TitleDrop: ''Judgment of Corruption'' (where it is part of the chorus.)
** Also in the ending narration of the ''Lunacy of Duke Venomania'' manga.
* TykeBomb: The title character of ''Five the Pierrot'' is an example of this.
* UnreliableNarrator: [[spoiler: Kayo Sudou]].
* TheUnreveal: The Gluttony novel, while giving a whole lot of new information on everything, still didn't address [[spoiler: how the hell Conchita ate herself.]]
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: [[spoiler: Kachess for Sateriasis in The Lunacy of Duke Venomania]]
* VillainousBreakdown: Venomania and Riliane both get these toward the ends of their arcs.
* VillainousGlutton: Banica Conchita
* VillainProtagonist: Each song is sung from the point of view of the character acting out its “sin,” save for ''Daughter of Evil''. Arguably they also fulfill this role in their own novels, again except for Riliane.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Kayo Sudou, "With a [[{{Blatant Lies}} good attitude]] and lovely skill, she's the talk of the whole neighborhood".
* WhamLine: Most commonly from the songs.
** From ''Evil Food Eater Conchita'':
-->'''Banica:'''[[spoiler: "There is still one thing I haven't eaten..."]]
** And probably the most infamous one from ''Tailor Shop of Enbizaka'':
-->'''Kayo:''' He spoke to me as though I were [[spoiler: a stranger]]
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Part of the risks making a contract with a Demon of Sin.
* {{Yandere}}: Kayo Sudou
* YouKilledMyFather: Banica tries to invoke this against the Demon of Gluttony, who had been blamed for killing her mother, but it reminds her that her father was the one who really did it.
* YourCheatingHeart:
** Yufina who was already married, to Maylis' brother Martius, was the lover of Kachess.
** Margarita's husband.
** Kayo's lover as well, [[spoiler: except that he's not her lover at all, he doesn't even ''know'' her, and the women she thinks he's cheating on her with are his wife and two daughters]].

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Riliane, within only ''two years'' of ruling Lucifenia.
* AbortedDeclarationOfLove: Allen backs out of [[CannotSpitItOut telling Michaela he loves her]] while she is hidden and safe in the well. Michaela still takes notice of his feelings, but also realizes she can't love him back. [[spoiler: He manages to confess too late, when he finds her on the verge of death from Ney's attack]].
* TheAbridgedSeries: The Evillious Chronicles now has [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JMH9TfLero&feature=g-all-lik one]]
* AgonyOfTheFeet: As punishment for their crimes, the members of the Red Shoes Parade are forced to dance in burning hot red shoes, giving them their KarmicDeath.
* AlasPoorYorick: In the velvet mix version of ''Servant of Evil'', [[spoiler: one of the first images depicts Riliane crying as she cradles Allen's head.]]
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: A running cause of angst, throughout the series, and in some cases a plot point:
** Riliane's love for Kyle going unrequited was the cause of the Green Hunting.
** Several characters, including Allen and Kyle, have their love for Michaela going unrequited, [[spoiler: since she only loves Clarith.]]
** [[spoiler: Prim's feelings for Arth (if such twisted feelings can be called love) were part of the reason why she grew to hate Anne.]]
* AllThereIsToKnowAboutTheCryingGame: Most people these days only remember [[spoiler: Allen dying]] in this series.
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: Like the Deadly Sins of Evil novels, ''Praefacio of Blue'' ends with a scene involving Gallerian Marlon, hundreds of years later.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Michaela receives two. [[spoiler: The first one comes from Clarith, who desperately tries to stall for time so the sleeping pill she gave her could take effect and Michaela could be taken to safety. The second one comes from Allen, as he finds her dying in the well he admits he loves her.]]
* AnyoneCanDie: Really takes the cake in the Evillious Chronicles. In order; [[spoiler: Arth and Anne die of the Gula Disease, Leonhart is assassinated by Allen, Ein is killed trying to protect Clarith, Michaela is stabbed to death by Ney, Gast is killed by Germaine, Mariam is stabbed by Ney, Minis is killed for resisting arrest, Allen is beheaded, Prim is stabbed by Ney, Keel is bashed on the head by Irina who then kills Ney in her sleep, Germaine gets her personality overwritten by Irina and Riliane dies of old age]].
* ArrangedMarriage: Riliane and Kyle
* ArcWords: The phrases "[To do so and so], I’ll even become evil" and "If I could be reborn" have featured in some of the songs as well as the novels and manga.
* AxCrazy: [[spoiler: Ney completely loses control in ''Praefacio of Blue'', murdering her mother, becoming possessed by Conchita's glass, and trying to kill Kyle.]]
* {{BFS}}: Chartette has a ''huge'' sword. According to the guidebook, it's ''two meters'' long.
* BattleButler: Riliane has several servants who are capable of combat, whether she knows it or not. To give names, these would be Allen, Chartette, Mariam, [[spoiler:and Ney]], although not all of them end up fighting on Riliane's side.
* BittersweetEnding: Ignoring some of the things that happened after, [[spoiler:Allen and Michaela die, Riliane would live with the regret for the rest of her life, Clarith loses the first true friend she ever had, Kyle pretty much loses his entire family, Germaine gets possessed by Irina and Yukina's family is essentially shattered]]. The "sweet" part is that [[spoiler:Riliane ultimately becomes a better person, Michaela and Allen AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence, Kyle is free from his mother's control and lives the life he wanted, Germaine manages to avenge her father, Clarith starts to gain new friends (including Riliane) and Yukina becomes a famous storyteller]].
** The short story Daughter of Fog ends this way as well. Yvette Shalgam was able to move on from her dark past and find peace at the monastery, but [[spoiler: she never got over Gast, and the Golden Key she killed her father with is now missing.]]
* BloodFromTheMouth: Clarith's mother, who is ill with a widespread disease that also killed the previous rulers of Lucifenia, dies while vomiting blood. [[spoiler: Mariam Futapie]] also displays this after she is [[spoiler: stabbed in the back by Ney]].
* BookEnds: The song ''Daughter of White'' begins and ends with Clarith finding a collapsed girl, nursing her back to health, and befriending her despite a difference in status. In fact, the next-to-last verse quotes several lines verbatim from the first.
** In ''Clôture of Yellow'' [[spoiler: Allen's]] first and [[FamousLastWords last]] line of dialogue is "Oh, it's snack time."
* [[ShowWithinAShow BookWithinABook]]: ''Red Shoe Parade'' and ''A Frog’s and My Love Romance'' are both based on stories written by Yukina Freesis.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler: Riliane]] in ''Story of Evil''.
* ButterflyOfDeathAndRebirth: In the PV of ''Handbeat Clocktower,'' Prim slumps down in her chair and dissolves into a swarm of butterflies during the lyric "On top of the Clocktower, you sit on a chair decaying".
* TheCaligula: Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche (AKA "The Daughter of Evil")
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler: Prim Marlon]].
** Abyss I.R., too, befitting her other appearances in the Chronicles.
* ChildByRape: In ''Praefacio of Blue'', it's revealed that [[spoiler: Prim used the powers of the Venom Sword to seduce Arth and have sex with him, leading to Ney's birth.]]
* ChildProdigy: Yukina Freesis
* AChildShallLeadThem: Riliane is only 14 years old, and subverted by her tyrannical tendencies. This whole trope is actually deconstructed, because it's clear what the pressure of the position and [[LonelyAtTheTop loneliness from being separated from her twin]] had done to her.
** Played straight with Shaw Freesis once he takes control of the Freesis Firm under Keel's guidance.
* ChocolateBaby: [[spoiler: Ney's blonde hair meant that she could not have been the child of the blue-haired Marlon king, forcing Prim to cover up her infidelity by handing her off to Abyss I.R. and claiming the baby was stillborn.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: Riliane, to King Kyle. In addition, [[spoiler: Prim was this towards Arth before deciding she’d rather kill him to spite Anne.]]
* ClockTower: Features in ''Praefacio of Blue'' as well as its corresponding song ''Handbeat Clocktower''.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: A common trope in the Story of Evil not just with the characters (being sung by Vocaloids) but also with the countries they came from; Lucifenia as the "Yellow Kingdom," Elphegort as the "Green Country," and so on.
** Interestingly, the nicknames for the different countries all come from different sources in-universe.
* CoolMask: Kyle and later the Espionage Task Force wear these.
* CourtMage: Elluka Clockworker for the court of Lucifenia, Abyss I. R. for the court of Marlon.
** Shortly before the start of the story, Elluka had served this role for Beelzenia as well.
* CryIntoChest: Clarith does this when Michaela tells her she's a wonderful person.
* DyingAlone: Riliane feared this as the Revolution came close to succeeding and all her servants but Allen abandoned her.
** [[spoiler: It’s also how Mariam dies, betrayed by everyone she knew. Chartette also shares this fate, although she dies decades after the ''Story of Evil'' proper.]]
* DarkActionGirl: [[spoiler: Ney Futapie]].
* DeadHandShot: The final panel of ''Retrouver of Silver''.
* DeadPersonConversation: [[spoiler: Michaela and Clarith are given a chance to talk one last time after the latter starts working in the church.]]
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler: Gast has been searching for a good location to die, eventually deciding to make the palace of Lucifenia his final battleground. He does not hold back in battle, though, and he comes close to killing Germaine before she gets the upper hand.]]
* DeclarationOfProtection: Serves as one of the ArcWords in the story; Allen’s to Riliane is featured most prominently, with other characters quoting him almost word for word.
* DisguisedInDrag: Allen does this in order to pull off [[spoiler: the swap that saves Riliane from execution.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: Princess Riliane's response to the man she loves rejecting her in favor of a girl from another country is to completely destroy said country, and the first novel states that she regularly sentences people to death for minor "crimes" such as spilling water on her dress or just looking at her the wrong way.
* [[DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength Does Not Know Her Own Strength]]: Chartette, who ends up tearing up clothes and breaking furniture when trying to help set up a party in the beginning of ''Clôture of Yellow''. It does help her with manual labor, however.
* DownerEnding:
** ''Retrouver of Silver'' ends with [[spoiler: Mariam Futapie getting stabbed in the back by her adopted daughter Ney]].
* DwindlingParty: They were a small party to begin with, but the Three Heroes get subjected to this early on.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[{{Badass}} Chartette]]'s death.
* EverybodysDeadDave: Clarith in ''Daughter of White''. "[[TearJerker Gone, everyone's gone...]]"
* EverythingsSquishierWithCephalopods: Elluka's "Very Amazing Octopus".
* EvilStoleMyFaith: As a result of the violent discrimination they faced from devout Levin believers solely because of their heritages, Gast and Clarith both developed atheistic beliefs. Gast explicitly says he despises the Levin church because of how they treated him and his family, and in the Fanbook's profile of him he is not given a religious affiliation. Clarith cites a more specific reason, saying that God can't exist if her mother is allowed to suffer a slow and maddening death by Gula Disease, although her mother's statements suggest she's held these beliefs even before the diagnosis.
** ThereIsAGod: That said, as Clarith finally experiences friendship, she gradually starts believing in the existence of God and spirits. After [[spoiler: Michaela is killed and Clarith falls back into depression]], Keel asks her if she believes in God. She replies that though she didn't in the past, she does now. Clarith ends up becoming a nun in a Levin church.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In the novels, Riliane's hair is eventually cut short, while Kyle's hair is brushed back while he's still [[spoiler: under Prim's control]].
* FantasticRacism: The Elphe's treatment of all foreigners is an example of this.
** So too is their treatment of the Netsuma Clan, who are indigenous to Elphegort but were persecuted to near-extinction because of ''one Netsuma’s'' connection to Duke Venomania hundreds of years ago.
* FiveManBand: Yukina's group in the third and fourth novels can be seen like this:
** TheHero: [[InnocentProdigy Yukina]], with many traits of TheSmartGuy and some of TheChick.
** TheLancer: [[LadyInRed Germaine]], doubles as TheBigGuy in ''Praefacio of Blue''.
** TheSmartGuy: [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld Gumillia]] [[spoiler: and to an extend, [[CourtMage Elluka.]]]]
** TheBigGuy: [[SuperStrength Chartette]], although she only appears in the third novel.
** SixthRanger: [[IJustWantToBeNormal King Kyle]], after [[spoiler: being freed from the mirror's influence]].
* ForcedIntoEvil: [[spoiler:Mikina Freesis was tricked by Prim into entering a contract with the demon of Greed, which resulted in her accidentally killing her father, and was told that the demon would go after her husband and kids next if she didn't start working for Abyss. This resulted in the deaths of Michaela (and all the fallout from that) and Ney, and nearly that of Yukina.]]
* FreudianTrio: The Three Heroes of Lucifenia, with Leonhart Avadonia as the Id, Elluka Clockworker as the Ego and Mariam Futapie as the Superego.
* FriendlessBackground: Clarith.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Riliane. [[spoiler: That is, until she realizes what she's done and regrets it, after her brother's sacrifice and death.]] Also, [[spoiler: Prim Marlon]].
* GriefSong: ''Regret Message''
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler: Ney Futapie]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Riliane]] in the first half of the series.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: Riliane, Kyle, and Ney]] all experience this.
* HeroicBSOD: Yukina gets hit hard with this after [[spoiler: Mikina confesses to assisting Abyss, helping kick off the Green Hunting and telling Ney where Michaela was. When Abyss surrounds Yukina with fire, she's still too shocked to do anything but give up and wait to die]].
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Allen [[TwinSwitch switches places with Riliane]] in order to save her from execution]].
* HumanityEnsues: Voluntarily done for Michaela and Gumillia.
* IDontWantToDie: At the end of the novel ''Clôture of Yellow'', [[spoiler: Allen]] briefly goes through this.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Clarith prays for a friend before meeting Michaela.
* InternalizedCategorism: Clarith puts herself down constantly for having white hair, while talking about how beautiful everyone else's green hair is.
* InTheBack: [[spoiler:Ney kills Mariam this way. To add to it, Mariam had just finished retreating from a battle she was badly injured in.]]
* InterspeciesRomance: Between a snake and a frog in ''[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin The Frog's and My Love Romance]]''. Yeah, it's [[ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext just as weird as it sounds]]. It also [[spoiler: [[DownerEnding doesn't end well]]]]... This is also included in ''Story of Evil'' proper, with Michaela (a spirit of the forest who previously spent time as a robin) being the target of affection for several humans.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Riliane has this attitude. [[spoiler: However, she [[CharacterDevelopment eventually snaps out of it]].]]
* KillTheOnesYouLove: Brought up where Allen has to kill his adopted father [[MyMasterRightOrWrong because Riliane told him to]]. Later, he is ordered to kill Michaela, the girl he fell in love with. [[spoiler: He isn't able to carry it out ''or'' save Michaela, but he still takes the blame]].
* [[KingIncognito King]][=/=][[KingIncognito Princess Incognito]]: [[spoiler:Ney, who keeps this up even when she stops being a spy and goes back to Marlon, Kyle, who wants to interact with people below his status and uses a penname for his artwork, which he later adopts as a disguise during the revolution, and Riliane, who is forced to do this since she was supposed to have been executed.]]
* LadyAndKnight: Riliane and Allen are of the dark type.
* LadyOfWar: Mariam Futapie, who moves elegantly in battle even when covered in the blood of enemies she's cut down.
* LaResistance: Germaine starts building one after her father's death, and it eventually grows into a complete revolution.
* LastDisrespects: In Cloture of Yellow, one of the main characters, Elluka Clockworker, attends the funeral of Leonhart Avadonia, apparently just to call him an idiot, and leaves.
* LastKiss: And only kiss, [[spoiler: shared by Clarith and Michaela before the latter is forced by the former to hide in a well. Michaela is killed a couple of days later, and she is intangible when she appears to Clarith after this.]]
* LetsDuet: Towards the ends of ''Servant of Evil'' and ''Thousand-Year Wiegenlied''.
* LongLostRelative: Riliane lost her memories of Allen being her brother, and it's only when [[spoiler: he's preparing to sacrifice himself for her sake]] that she finds out about it. Additionally, in ''Praefacio of Blue'', [[spoiler: it's revealed that Ney's father was the king of Lucifenia, making her a half-sister to the twins, although they might not have ever known. ''Prefacio'' is also where Kyle learns that Ney is his own half-sister as well]].
* LoveAtFirstSight: Both Allen and Kyle fell in love with Michaela at first sight.
* LoveChart: The guidebook for the ''Story of Evil'' series has one.
* LoveDodecahedron: ''Story of Evil.'' For starters, while not a romantic love, Allen has very strong devotion for Riliane that is eventually returned. Riliane is engaged to Kyle and wants to go through with it, but he has no interest in her and pines for Michaela, who is also loved by Allen. Michaela instead loves Clarith, which is reciprocated. In addition, a man from Clarith's village had feelings for her, while multiple men proposed to Michaela.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Allen is an example of the "genuinely well-meaning LoveMartyr" variety (in ''Servant of Evil'', he even says outright that he's willing to become evil if it's to protect Riliane)
* MakeitLookLikeAnAccident: Prim asks Abyss I.R. to do this to [[spoiler: Arth, leading to his being infected by Goula.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler: Prim Marlon]] and [[spoiler: Ney Futapie]].
* MeaningfulEcho: See ArcWords and DeclarationOfProtection above.
* MistakenForGay: When talking about her lack of interest in romantic relationships, Michaela words it in a way that sounds like she's saying she's not interested in men, and right as she realizes how it can be misinterpreted, Clarith laughs and tells her she's the same way. In a subversion, Michaela does later turn out to be attracted to women (or at least Clarith), though her views on men remain unclear.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: Ney Futapie]]
* MoralityChain: Inverted; Instead of going even more insane and becoming crueler, [[spoiler: Riliane]] becomes racked with regret and self-loathing after [[spoiler: Allen dies]], and desperately wants to change her ways afterward.
* MotherMakesYouKing: [[spoiler:Prim doesn't care who she has to crush in order to make Kyle the king, even if it's Kyle himself.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Poor, ''poor'' [[spoiler: Riliane]].
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Allen to Riliane.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: The whole reason Elphegort was invaded and the green-haired women were massacred in Story of Evil was because Riliane wanted to be sure she killed said hypotenuse, which she succeeds at.
* NoBiologicalSex: Forest spirits don't have genders, hence why Michaela [[JapanesePronouns uses "boku" as a spirit, and "Watashi" as a human]]. Elluka nonetheless considers the spirits to be female.
* NoblewomansLaugh: At the very beginning of ''Daughter of Evil''.
* OffWithHisHead: The ending of ''Daughter of Evil'' and ''Servant of Evil''.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: Yukina figures out that [[spoiler:the person claiming to be Elluka may not actually be her]] because she claimed to hate tea when she was offered it, called Gumillia by an incorrect name, and didn't even remember Yukina's name.
* OverlyLongScream: In the novel ''Clôture of Yellow'', Allen's scream when he [[spoiler: sees Michaela die]] takes up an entire ''paragraph''.
* PluckyGirl: Yukina Freesis.
* PrincessesRule: Riliane. Justified, as she refuses to accept the title of Queen out of respect for her late mother.
* PuppetKing / UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler: Kyle Marlon, who got upstaged by his own mother.]]
* RealityEnsues: In the fourth novel, Abyss I.R. [[spoiler: while [[DemonicPossession taking control]] of Mikina]] [[TapOnTheHead hits Keel Freesis in the head]] [[spoiler: to escape and kill Ney]]. The WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue in the ''Fanbook'' states Keel never truly recovered from the concussion, and had to retire early, leaving Shaw (who was way too young at the time) in charge of the Freesis Firm.
* Really700YearsOld: Elluka is the more straight example of this, since she looks to be in her 20s but has been alive since near the start of this whole saga. Gumillia and Michaela also look in her early teens or mid-twenties, but are actually 1028 years old. The last example is justified by them being forest spirits.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: In the PV for ''Red Shoes Parade,'' the eponymous group of vagabonds is represented by shadow puppets wearing red shoes.
* RedHerring: Michaela is killed by a ''golden-haired assassin'', which fans attribute to being Allen Avadonia. [[spoiler: It's actually the blond-haired Ney Futapie who killed Michaela under her birth mother, Prim Marlon's, order.]]
* ReverseMole: [[spoiler: Chartette dons a disguise and starts feeding information to the growing rebel group in Lucifenia, even though she still spends time drinking tea with Riliane. It's only after the revolution hits the palace that she severs all allegiance with Riliane.]]
* RoyalBrat: Riliane in particular.
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: [[spoiler: Clarith and Riliane.]]
* [[SeparatedAtBirth Separated At Childhood]]: Riliane and Allen.
* SharingABody: [[spoiler: Gumillia]] and [[spoiler: Elluka]], after the latter's body is stolen by [[spoiler: Abyss I. R.]].
* ShoutOut: [[spoiler: Riliane and Allen's TwinSwitch in ''Story of Evil?'' It's to ''ATaleOfTwoCities!'']]
* ShrinkingViolet: Clarith comes across as this.
* SiblingYinYang: Riliane is selfish and proud, Allen is a self-sacrificing LoveMartyr. While part of this can be attributed to their different upbringings, the song ''Twiright Prank'', which takes place before the twins were separated, reveals that Riliane has always been the more selfish twin.
* SketchySuccessor: Queen Anne was actually quite competent and fair, with Lucifenia becoming prosperous under her reign. Once she died and her daughter Riliane took over, it all went right down the drain.
* SoHappyTogether: ''Daughter of White'' and ''Thousand-Year Wiegenlied'' cover this.
* SuccessionCrisis: Two of them: first, when Riliane and Allen/Alexiel lost their father, a political struggle took place over which one of them would get to rule after their mother died, resulting in the assassinations of two ministers and, according to the official records, Alexiel. The second was in Marlon thanks to the king having numerous children with his first wife. [[spoiler: To ensure that only her child Kyle could rule, Prim assassinated almost all of his half-siblings.]]
* SurvivorGuilt: In ''Daughter of White'', [[spoiler: Clarith felt this after the green-haired women were killed, ''especially'' for her friend Michaela, whom she wished she could have switched places with.]]
** ''Regret Message'' is about this, though it really ''is'' her fault in this case.
* TangledFamilyTree: The [[spoiler: d'Autriche, Avadonia, Futapie, and Marlon]] lines can all be connected on the same tree. Bonus points for [[spoiler: Kyle and Riliane, who are engaged, both having Ney as a half-sister]].
* {{Timeskip}}: The novel ''Praeludium of Red'' takes place five years after ''Clôture of Yellow''. There’s also a timeskip near the end of ''Wiegenlied of Green'', although it isn't emphasized.
* TokenYuriGirls: Michaela and Clarith.
* TongueTrauma: Clarith inflicts this on herself in ''Wiegenlied of Green''. She bites down on her tongue when [[spoiler: she learns that Michaela has been killed, and she starts to bleed so badly that the soldiers that have captured her begin to panic and give her medical treatment]].
* TwinSwitch: The most popular twist in the series, [[in ''Servant of Evil'']]
* TreacheryCoverup: After the climactic battle with [[spoiler: Prim and Ney, Kyle covered up their crimes to keep the country from falling into chaos.]]
* TwinSwitch: A major plot point when [[spoiler: Allen switches places with Riliane to save her from the guillotine.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Allen to Riliane.
* VillainousBreakdown: Riliane experiences this near the end of ''Clôture of Yellow''.
** In ''Praefacio of Blue'', a violent and disturbing one happens to [[spoiler: Ney as she succumbs to the Demon of Gluttony.]]
* TheVillainSucksSong: As most of ''Daughter of Evil'' is sung ''about'' Riliane, rather than from her point of view, it's closer to this than to VillainSong.
* WhamLine: Many.
** From ''Daughter of Evil'':
-->'''Riliane:''' Destroy the green country.
** From ''Servant of Evil'':
-->'''Allen:''' [[spoiler: Wear my clothes and flee]]...
** From ''Daughter of White'':
--> "I wonder [[spoiler: who that boy was]]..."
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Yukina Freesis.
* WorldTree: The Millennium Tree, which is inhabited by a god. The first one featured in the story is Held, and he is later replaced by [[spoiler: Michaela]].
* YouKilledMyFather: Germaine's and Allen's adopted father Leonhart rebelled against Riliane's rule and snuck food out to the hungry people, but was caught and killed for his efforts. Germaine swore to avenge him, and later led the successful revolution against Riliane. [[spoiler: [[TwinSwitch Well, mostly successful.]] Then again, Allen ''was'' the one who actually killed Leonhart, so...]]
** [[spoiler: Before his death, Germaine pleaded Allen to escape with her, however, Allen played this card so the execution would continue.]]
YourCheatingHeart: It turns out that [[spoiler:Prim Marlon]] had an affair with [[spoiler:King Arth]], although the latter did not do so of his own free will.

* AllJustADream: ''Madame Merry Go-Round'' is [[spoiler: what Gammon Octo thinks will happen to the Master of the Court if she continues to pursue the Sins. She doesn't believe him though]].
* AndIMustScream: Irregular’s predicament, trapped in the Master of the Court's womb and made to relive the sins of his past life.
* ArcSymbol: Gears feature in several songs, although ''Heartbeat Clocktower'' is the most obvious about it. Notably, gears are used as a metaphor for fate throughout the entire Chronicles.
* ArcWords: “Lu Li La,” the titular Clockwork Lullaby, is most prominent in this series. The word Utopia is also repeated several times.
* ClockTower: Evils Theater has one that is, naturally, the setting of ''Heartbeat Clocktower''.
* DescentIntoDarknessSong: ''Wordplay.''
* FiveBadBand: The inhabitants of Evils Theater:
** TheBigBad: The Master of the Court (taking up her father's gavel and planning to lead all of her minions to Hell)
** TheDragon: Gear (his duty being to maintain the Clockworker’s Doll.
** TheBrute: The Master of the Graveyard (her job is to [[ToServeMan "dispose of"]] anyone who enters the forest)
** TheEvilGenius: Ma (A smart lady, after all...)
** TheDarkChick: The Waiter (her position in the theater is very limited and she's very ticked off by it)
** TheSixthRanger: Gammon Octo
*** TokenGoodTeammate: Irregular/[[spoiler: [[MessianicArchetype The Master of the Heavenly Yard]]]] (for obvious reasons)
* FramingDevice: Several of the Evils album booklets serve as this.
** ''Evils Forest'', which is about Ma greeting an intruder and speaking to them about the forest and its “rules”.
** ''Evils Kingdom'', which is about Ma showing the “movies” to a soon to be judged theater intruder.
** ''Evils Court'', about Gammon Octo's thoughts on the scripts he helps Ma create.
* HeroicSacrifice: Gear takes out his own heart and uses it to prevent the clock from stopping in order to keep the Clockworker’s Doll alive.
* HumansAreBastards: Judging by ''Capriccio Farce'', this is Master of the Court’s opinion.
* KangarooCourt: Gammon Octo (the gardener) is subjected to this after arriving at the theater in the forest and getting captured.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Ode to Joy for the unnamed Rin character.
* MoeAnthropomorphism: the awakened vessels of Sin appear to be this for the Demons of Sin, called "awakened vessels".
* MotorMouth: The Servants do this a couple of times in ''Capriccio Farce'' and the Clockwork Doll joins them the second time.
* OminousPipeOrgan: The instrumental ''5 Minutes to Court''.
* ParasolOfPrettiness: The Master of the Graveyard; definitely referring to the high class and femininity part, not the innocence and demurity part.
* ShoutOut:
** ''Capriccio Farce'' to ''Franchise/AceAttorney''.
* SlasherSmile:
** In the PV of ''Capriccio Farce'', Conchita's servants have this expression.
* TakeUpMySword: [[spoiler: The Clockwork Doll]] became the clocktower's Director after Gallerian death. She's even using Gallerian's hammer and playing the judge's role in Gammon's trial.
* TheStarscream: Pretty much half the inhabitants of Evils Theater are blatantly planning against the Master of the Court, while the other half are ambiguous in their motives.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Like her father before here and Ma, this seems to be the Master of the Court’s mentality. Both Gear and Gammon think that it will all just end in disaster.
* VillainSong: Master of the Graveyard’s titular song.
* VisualNovel: ''Capriccio Farce's'' PV, in a shout out to ''Franchise/AceAttorney''.
* WhamLine:
** From "Miniature Garden Girl":
-->''In the burned remains of the house''
-->''One can find the charred bodies of a man''
-->''And a [[spoiler: tiny clockwork doll'']]...
* WhenItAllBegan: Chrono Story alludes to Eve's Original Sin and the dividing of the sin vessels
-->”Beginning from the forest, the Chrono Story”
* WhereItAllBegan: The vessels of sin are placed in Evils Theater, which stands on Adam and Eve’s former home—where the Demons of Sin were released in ''Original Sin Story''.
